Will you be having an
EGGSTRAVAGANZA?
My Easter is fairly quiet, with a few familiar and loved items around me. Mam always used to make paste eggs and for many years I followed suit. These days I don’t have anyone to play “jarpies” with me, or hunt for Easter eggs, but I did have a lovely celebration with my lady friends on Maundy Thursday. Before we met up I had a browse around Newcastle, and couldn’t help but notice that Easter has gotten a whole lot fancier these days.
Me, I’m happy with a few flowers, the painted eggs I brought back from Poland a few years ago, and a soap duck and chick bought for me by my late Aunt Anna in Kraków’s Rynek Główny.
And on the mantlepiece, a floppy bunny (with eggs hidden inside- thanks, Kath!) and a few cards.
How does Easter look in your home? Wishing you peace and joy, and a happy heart.
It’s Saturday so it’s time to share your six words with Cate at Show My Face. I hope you have a lovely weekend, and I’ll see you on Monday for my walk.

Those are some eggs-strav-agant photos!

I like the golden egg decorated with blue and red poppies. But I wouldn’t want to tear that off!
Easter is like Christmas to me – without children it is meaningless unless you are religious, which I am not. When I was working it was a welcome break. I have treated myself to some pretty espresso cups and saucers (painted with birds) and out to Sunday lunch tomorrow. other than that I just hope for sunshine so I can go for a walk 🙂

Sounds good to me, Jude 🙂 I’ll be cooking our usual Sunday lunch. It’s brightened up a bit here after a dismal day yesterday so we’ll probably have a stroll on the beach. Not too far cos I’m still tired from zumba and food shopping. In Durham for a 20 years celebration at my friend’s pub tonight. Saving stamina 🙂 Happy Easter to you!

I don’t do roast dinners for the two of us, so every now and then we go to a pub for one. Much nicer 🙂

Thanks, Karen. I went in one of the Department stores and the cost of some of the eggs was frightening! Happy Easter to you 🙂

Meant to ask, what’s jarpies, Jo? 😳

Yes, what is that? Not an expression I am aware of.

Still waiting to find outm, but I think it’s a very North East expression……

I thought someone would ask 🙂 Good old northern expression for when you do ‘battle’ with paste eggs to see who cracks first.

Who, or whose egg??

You see I am still puzzled as I haven’t heard of ‘paste’ eggs either? Is this a Geordie thing too? We used to colour real eggs and paint faces on them to have boiled on Easter Sunday, but paste? Almond paste?

Sorry ladies! Just had the seaside stroll before the weather changes its mind again. 🙂 I take your point, Sue- I usually crack first 🙂 I don’t really know where the term ‘paste’ eggs comes from. Jude. Just something I picked up from Mam. I should Google it- there’s sure to be logic somewhere? Yes- same boiled eggs, painted or dyed with onion skins or whatever variation you want to use. Us quaint northerners 🙂

Perhaps it comes from giving those eggs a pasting? As in a good beating? I love blogging – keeps the mind active learning all this new (and often trivial) information 😀

Here you are, Jude- this was in the North-East Dictionary. I didn’t even know we had one!
The origin of the word is French Pasques for Easter, after the Latin Pasca.
“Hard boiled eggs at Easter were known as paste eggs instead of pace eggs.”
I thought there was a religious connection- just couldn’t remember what 🙂

Interesting. Now I wonder where I can use that information? Thank you for your research, I’m sure you have better things to do with your time 🙂

Lovely post, Jo…quiet Easter for me, other than visiting friends for dinner tomorrow. But I have had a great run up to Easter, very sociable. Feeling a bit ‘MS’ey last couple of days, so I really have to slow down….. Have a peaceful and Happy Easter, Jo 🐣🐰

Your Easter is very pretty. No Hot Cross Buns in France and I haven’t made any this year. We do an egg tour of all the littlies round about, but that’s all. I’m about to make a seriously sinful chocolate cake for a sick friend.
Happy Easter to you.

The Easter displays in the shops are lovely, but I think your Easter decor is lovelier because it speaks to, and from, the heart. No Easter decorations in my house 😦 . But, I do have hot cross buns. 🙂
