Festive

Fizz!  Bang!  Whoop-whoop-whoop!  I know they’re a dreadful waste of money, but I can’t help the excitement I feel whenever I see fireworks.  The child in me claps it’s hands, and beams at the sky.

When my Polish family invited me to Norfolk to join their New Year celebrations, I knew there would be dancing, vodka- of course!- kissing, and more food than I could reasonably be expected to eat in a week.  I wasn’t disappointed on any of these counts, but the promise of fireworks at Cromer on New Year’s Day was the icing on the cake. (and yes, there was plenty of that, too).

Impatiently, we waited for the lights to dim and the show to start, gazing across the water for signs of activity on the pier.

And then, finally, the count down.  5-4-3-2-1- whooppee!

Impossible to replicate the sounds, the colours and the pure joy.  This week Paula has asked us to Pick a Word in Thursday’s Special.  I’ve picked an easy word, Festive, to stave off the January blues.

  1. I’m not against a few local firework displays, but the obscene amount that go up around the world by cities trying to outdo each other makes me sick. I’d rather forgo five minutes of flash, bang, wallop if they would put the money into helping the homeless get off the street, or feed several thousand hungry children, rehouse refugees… I could go on, but I’m sure you don’t want me to. But I am glad you (and him?) had a lovely time over the New Year – back to reality now. Or in your case, back to planning the escape… 😀

    1. It is a fund raising event, Jude, and half of the proceeds go to charity, but I do understand and sympathise with the rant. 🙂 🙂 He did enjoy most of it, in spite of himself. 🙂 But I still didn’t get my Christmas cake. Aldi didn’t have any 😦

      1. No mince pies either this year. We were decidedly anti-christmas. But I fancied some Christmas cake to have with the port. Oh well, I suppose the port will keep until next year. Or [a light bulb moment] I could have some with cheese… 😀 But what sort of cheese?

      2. Down to our last mince pie. I could share it? I have brandy cream, and half a bottle of port to go with the brie (French, I’m afraid, or there’s Red Leicester). And please will you take away this half tin of Quality Street? Our neighbours bequeathed them and I so wish they hadn’t. Will power? It’s my middle name 🙂 🙂

  2. I haven’t seen fireworks live for a while (a little too cold out there in New Year’s Eve). It looks like what you saw was a good show. Happy New Year Jo.

  3. I was laid low with the dreaded ‘lurgy so your fireworks were a treat. Now up and about and thinking to remove the tinsel and trees but reluctant to come back to earth. Still, sun shining today after 3 days of storms battering the coast and me unable to go out and see the stormy seas. Thanks for your lovely post.

    1. There’s been a lot of it about, Mari, but, touch wood, I’ve escaped so far. It’s raining and miserable here so we’ve made a start. Always sad to see them go. 😦 Take yourself for a gentle walk along the Tyne with me. I think you’ll enjoy it. Happy New Year! 🙂 🙂

      1. Am also confounded with horrid bug – vile cough thing, so my de-cluttering is postponed. There’s a point when Christmas ornaments can become a tad burdensome, but then it’s also hard to put the sparkle away. Nearly the 6th though, so perhaps we’ll both be up for some clean-sweeping by then. Waving to you in my nightie 🙂

      2. Oh, poor you! 😦 Mick’s got the bit between his teeth and is making off with the lights 😦 We’re the last in our street to take them down. Seems the season of goodwill is over!

      1. OH had something similar in the autumn (after the grandchildren arrived full of cold from Australia) and it lasted weeks! Bronchostop seemed to give him some relief.

    1. I can imagine Andrew! Home again? When you have a spare minute have a look at the Monday walk. You might like it. Happy 2018 though it’s a bit damp and dreary here today xx

  4. Sounds like you had a great New Year with your Polish family and got some good shots as well. I like Cromer, it’s a nice place and I’ve been there several times – its smaller neighbour Sheringham is lovely too 🙂

    1. It’s about 40 years since I was in Sheringham. As we passed the sign I did think it would be nice to see it again but it was a miserable grey day when we drove home. Better to cherish a memory is sunshine. Overall we did pretty well for weather and Cromer was looking very pretty. 🙂 🙂
