How do you feel about steps?

Climbing the ‘Poggi Ramps’
And a few distractions!
Worth a bit of a climb?
You could set up an easel
And paint this magnificense
He poses very nicely
In fine surroundings
Such a noble profile!
And how lucky to have this view!

Of course, it does rather depend what you’re climbing to see?  The views of Florence are magnificent, but I have good news for you.  The number 13 bus will take you up to Piazzale Michelangelo.  So, no need to worry for your September visit, Gilly.  I think you’ll love it!

Should you be really ambitious (or foolhardy!) there are more steps on offer, to take you up to San Miniato al Monte.

I had hoped to time my arrival for evensong and the attendant Gregorian chant, but my plans were a little awry that day.  The beautiful and unexpected cemetery was some compensation, and the church had a wonderful aura.

The way back down was more gentle, through lush greenery, and lead me past the tower of Porta San Niccolo, originally part of the city walls.

I apologise if you’re bored with my current obsession with Firenze, but I’m afraid there’s much more to come.  I haven’t even touched on the Uffizi or Palazzo Vecchio yet.  Can you guess where our Monday walk takes us?

  1. Your view of Florence and the Arno and the mountains brings my own time there back in vivid flashes. So very satisfying to see it looking as lovely and mysterious and heavy with history as ever.

  3. I know you’re not bonkers enough to think I’d get bored, I’m loving every photo and word you post. You’re way better than the guide books because you dig deep. I’d never heard of San Miniato, but I’ll add it to the list now and take some ibuprofen gel for the knees! Look at all that blue sky, weren’t you lucky I don’t suppose there was much warmth though, especially at night? Hugs and thanks sweetheart!

    1. Thanks, darlin! You’re far too kind. Mine is just a sort of wistful wander around whatever appeals to me. The temperatures got up to 16/17C at times and there was a bit of cloud cover at night so we didn’t do badly at all. 🙂 🙂

  10. Steps are not my favourite things, going down is worse than going up! Or at least my knees think so… Lovely photos and you had good weather it seems, you wouldn’t have seen much in my part of the world this week. And no. I am not in the least bored, but bus nos and other info would be useful – e.g where to stay, where to eat 🙂

    1. You know my blog is a piece of self indulgence and not intended to be useful, don’t you? 🙂 🙂 I always hesitate to recommend places to eat because we’re not at all the gourmet type. In Florence I’d done the research and had a few places I wanted to eat but the husband either didn’t fancy them or it was too far to walk at the end of a long day. 🙂 🙂 We stayed at the Mercure Centro Firenze- large and modern, with a lot of steps but a lift too. 🙂 It was 5 minutes from Santa Maria Novella station and an excellent location, with dozens of restaurant choices. Virtually every other building on Via Nazionale was a hotel so it’s a case of selecting a good deal in that area. It’s very flat on that side of Florence, so no problems there.

      1. It’s good to know a location for walking into the city – when I have accompanied OH to conferences often the hotels are way out and require using transportation which can be simple or not!

      1. There are always some compensations to find when traveling. You can always duck into museums or cafes and happily enjoy the day. I know you never have a wasted or bored moment. 🙂

        All is well here, Jo. I’m very excited, especially now that I finished the 10-hour eLearning course I had to take. I hate having to worry about work clothes, since my employer is so strict about them. I’m used to teaching in jeans or business casual clothes, not in suits and proper blouses and pantyhose!! Ugh. I wish I was going there just to travel and not work, but the money of course will pay for my travels. It’s all an adventure. I just got a book of 29 walks in Tokyo, so I can hopefully squeeze a lot urban hiking in while I’m there. 🙂

  15. I’m OK doing steps, but they do wear you out when they appear in the hundreds. Up is good exercise. Down is bad for the knees. So. Ideally there is something spectacular to see at the top, and aicnic table for lunch. 🙂

  19. Wonderful to see your walking tours again Jo! Last time I was in Florence was in 1975, great memories came flooding back – the timeline feels as ancient as some of the ruins (ha).
