Pie and mash and a pier

Relaxing comes in all shapes and sizes.  A bath, a book and a glass of wine is one of mine.  But I do have a weakness for a magnificent landscape, and any time that someone else is doing the cooking, that’s relaxation for me.

Strolling down the pier at Saltburn-by-the-Sea, how is it possible to have a care in the world?  The shoreline is inexplicably festooned in seaweed, and in the shops swathes of tinsel drape the trees.  Cocooned in the warm, the simple pleasures of pie and mash will do me just fine.

You want to join in?  It’s Six Word Saturday and time to simply Relax.

    1. Looking forward to a day out to an old friend’s new place tomorrow, Cathy. She lives in a pub and there’s a Christmas fair on in the street so it should be good. 🙂

    1. I just amended my reply to Annika, Gilly. Guess who wasn’t paying attention to the menu and was too busy admiring the war time memorabilia? Turns out there was a veggie pie after all 🙂 🙂

  1. Sounds good. And of course looks good. I’d have been down there photographing the seaweed. I hope it’s pain-free relaxation for you. I’m going to have to have a pie and mash some time – my English friend in Australia always relishes it when she goes back to England. Sunny here at the moment. J’s just gone for a walk to the river, after coffee with the mob – Maja made J’s and Jaś made mine. He brought back photos to feed my home-longing: bush tracks, orchids, dog frolicking on the beach and fish our son caught for him.

    1. The seaweed was totally unexpected. Never seen it like that so the seas must have been really stormy. How are you doing for snow? I saw that there is LOTS down south! To be truthful it wasn’t the bestest pie- too much pastry for my liking, but nice filling- but the ambience in the pie and mash shop was lovely. 🙂 Treat- coffee from Jas. Yes, please! 🙂 🙂 What date do you actually go back to Australia?

      1. A white wonderland yesterday: grey mush today. Enough for a 6 foot snowman in the park, which I didn’t see. We leave here on March 8th. I’m just trying to write the ninth month: the end of November snuck up on me. Hugs from a lazy day – J’s busy in the kitchen turning my chicken stock into beetroot soup after a stroll round the hood to lay claim to it again. A lazy hug or two heading your way.

    2. So soon!!! Going to have to organise that pie and mash quick! I’m in the Algarve the first 2 weeks in January, and Florence end of Feb. Be still my beating heart! I caught Mick at a vulnerable moment and he said YES! Enjoy your well earned laziness 🙂 🙂 Coffee and hugs with chocolate digestives. Ooh, I’m so naughty this weekend 🙂

      1. Thanks Jo. Yes, not too bad. Just lots of distractions, like my little mate Jack having an infected paw which has needed lots of attention and vet visits, as well as one visit to a 24 hour Vet emergency centre. LOL, I did laugh at myself. I have done many an emergency trip to doctors with my children; never thought I would do a midnight trip with my fur child!!!

  2. “Relaxing comes in all shapes and sizes” You said it so well, Jo. We all have our own ways to relax. I like strolling down by piers and beaches too, only if it’s not too windy. I went down to the beach today (it’s summer here in Australia) and it was way to blowy for my liking, lol 😀 Pies and mash? I’ve had them individually but never as a combo before. What’s a Ration Book? Hmmm…

    1. I gather it’s pretty warm right now, Mabel? Beginning of another long, hot….. 🙂 🙂 This restaurant is styled in a war time era, when ration books dominated what you could have to eat. It’s rather a nice idea. Wishing you a lovely weekend.

  3. Heavenly…thank you for such a lovely start to my Saturday…the colours are pristine and sheer, it’s as if I can taste the salt in the air. The coast is a wonderful place to relax, unwind and then to finish with a meal overlooking the sea. Perfect. Oh, can it be a veggie pie, please!

  4. What glorious skies and that pie looks scrumptious . . . . . we’ve got a day of rain here so am feeling very envious of your day on the pier and beach, even if there was lots of seaweed.

      1. Mushy peas reminds me of cold, dark Wednesday evenings in the 70s, walking home after Scouts, having made a detour to the local chippie. Chicken and mushroom pie, chips and mushies!
