Six word Saturday

All set for a bright future!

Happy 26th birthday to my son, James!  Yesterday we went to Leeds to kick off the celebrations in style.  His new apartment had been looking very bland and white and needed an injection of colour.  A bit of artwork on the walls, rug, cushion, potted plant… and do you recognise BB8 sitting there on the windowsill?  Happy in his new home.  As we hope James will be.

It hasn’t all been smooth sailing.  Life seldom is, is it?  Leeds is a city busy reinventing itself.  An interesting juxtaposition of old and shiny new. James is a big fan of Asian cuisine, and we ate at Bar Soba in The Light- a new complex for dining and entertainment.  It’s good to be optimistic about the future.  Optimistic and full of hope, as the weekly challenge suggests.

Have a lovely weekend and I hope to see you on Monday for another walk.

  1. Happy birthday to James, Jo! I’m sure it felt good to get him set up in his own apartment. I hope everything goes well for him! You say it hasn’t all been smooth sailing, but all looks good now.

I’m in the midst of a maelstrom here! You know that we set up Adam (23) in an apartment in Richmond, two hours south of here, on January 8. This past Wednesday, Adam came up to visit, saying he was going to do a presentation on Permaculture in Maryland. On Thursday morning, when we woke up, he left a note to say he was on a 5:40 a.m. flight to Hawaii and he will be back February 1. I seriously doubt he will be back! After we just set him up in an apartment!! He put the plane ticket on a charge card that a bank foolishly gave him! ARGHH. I give up!!

I’m snowed in here in Virginia. We’re in the midst of the biggest blizzard in our history (or so the news channels say!). I’m just hunkered in and decluttering, and eating a lot of comfort foods. Mike’s going to get me out shoveling soon. Keep an eye out for pictures. 🙂

    1. Oh heck, Cathy! I can hardly imagine how you must have felt. I only hope that he finds something self-supporting and useful to do in Hawaii. There are many worse places and I’m envious, but I know that’s totally not the point. At 23 James was giving us lots of heartache, so don’t despair.
I saw the projected weather and thought of you, and my other east coast friends, Cathy. One extreme to another! Our little trickle of snow barely registered here. Hope Mike’s made good inroads with that shovel. Sounds like a good time to stay indoors and work on the book 😦

      1. I hope so too, Jo. He does know some people in Hawaii, but I’m not sure why he went, whether for some kind of retreat or work or just to hang out with those people. He has very little money and only those (blasted!) credit cards, which may be at their limit. Anyway, we’re not making any effort on his behalf. If he wants something, he’s got to ask us. I can forgive him for his dishonesty, but we are pretty much washing our hands of him at this point. Yes, wouldn’t we all love to live in Hawaii!!?? It’s that Generation Y thing, plus other issues (I just posted a great article about that on Facebook).

Thanks for the hopeful tidbit about James and the words to not despair. We’ve been despairing for a couple of years over him, and we’re pretty much exhausted by now. I’m just trying not to give him much thought at all except to wish him well.

We are buried under almost 2 feet of snow now, and it’s still coming down. It’s supposed to continue through part of Sunday, so it will be a lot when all is said and done. I just shoveled, took a hot bath, ate some hot soup, and now it’s on to the KonMari method of decluttering! 🙂

    2. I thought about you Cathy when I heard the weather forecast last night. Hope you stay warm as they said there might be a lot of damage to power lines etc. in the DC and Virginia areas. As for offspring – what can I say! I have one who has always troubled me, he is 36 now, still single, still drinks too much; but I love him dearly, as I am sure you do Adam. But, oh, boy, did he give me grief in his teens! And don’t get me started on irresponsible banks who give these kids credit cards. At some point you have just got to say, that’s enough, up to you now mate and let them get on with it. Hopefully Adam will find something that suits him in Hawaii or, you never know, he may come back to Richmond 🙂
Take care and make plenty of hot soup!

      1. Hi Jude. We still have power (knock on wood) and we just shoveled an hour. I took a hot bath, ate some Italian sausage soup, and now am getting ready to tackle my decluttering project. We have nearly 2 feet of snow and it’s still coming down!

Thanks for sharing about your son. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one going through this. We are now to the point of washing our hands of him; he’s on his own. He’s abused our trust, and though I can forgive him, I’m ready to move on. I’ve had enough.

Who knows what he’ll decide to do. We’re waiting until Feb. 1. If he doesn’t show up, we’ll sublet the apartment and cut him off completely. We’re so done. 🙂

      2. Tough love Cathy, some times that is all it takes. Parenting isn’t easy… but I’m sure things will work out eventually. And I hope to see some proper snow photos from you!

      3. Tough love is our only option at this point, Jude. I hope I can get out for a walk in the snow soon. It’s two feet deep in the woods, so sadly too difficult to walk there. The only place I can walk is on the plowed roads. 🙂

  2. Happy Birthday to James! He looks very happy 🙂 Those spring rolls look delicious and quite big, and I’m sure all of you enjoyed what was served. Looks like a very classy place. Hope he keeps his apartment neat and tidy 😀

    1. It’s quite a ‘young’ sort of place, Kate. ‘Good vibe’ as they say 🙂 James is a big noodle and pad thai fan and we were happy to go along with it. I had those spring rolls and they had a lovely coconut addition that I really liked. 🙂
