Icecream, anyone?

I think, by now, most people who follow me will have a pretty good idea of how the place where I live looks.  I’ve trekked you north and south of here, showing you some spectacuilar scenery, and a little industrial grunge too.  What you won’t have seen much of, until now, is our neighbouring seaside “resort”, Seaton Carew.

Like such resorts throughout Britain it’s a little tacky, but in the summer months it’s a mecca for young and old alike. (and I’m not just talking bingo!)  It has a decent stretch of beach, a paddling pool and, of course, amusement arcades to part you from your pennies.  There’s really only one street to it, so you can’t exactly be overwhelmed.

Two fish and chip shops scowl at each other across the main street, and you can buy burgers and icecreams from the kiosks.  No candy floss, though.  I used to love that sugary smell and watching it whizz around the drum.  These days I’m rather fond of lemon tops.  I love the sharpness before you get down to the slurpy icecream.  How about you?  What’s your favourite seaside treat?

Don’t you always forget the bucket and spade? Dad can queue at the chippie while mum nips in here.
Or there’s the “sit down” option at the Waverley Cafe.
Then there’s the arcades. You know you want to!

I don’t know that I’d book a holiday here, but there are a couple of nice hotels and some B & B’s.  The Staincliffe is popular as a wedding venue, and has made a bid for notoriety by naming the Darwin Room after a local character who pretended to have died to get his hands on his insurance.  He paddled off into the sea and was never seen again. (until he was spotted in South America)  Don’t say we don’t have a sense of humour in the north east.

I thought I’d better show you these windows before the last of our hoped-for Indian Summer disappears.  It’ll be too cold to linger soon and we’ll all be clutching our hot chocolates.

  3. Reminds me of Littlehampton, West Sussex, where I had a summer job many years ago. And my favorite seaside holiday food remains chips with malt vinegar: I’m an American and those are a thrill for me.

    1. Does it turn your tongue red, Gem? (the licorice, not the corn 🙂 )
      I love toffee popcorn, which will be much the same, I think. Us multi cultural folk can eat ket (sweets in the north east of England) anywhere!

  8. Love looking at and in windows. The other evening we went to dinner and as I was waiting for my husband outside the parking garage (he had to go back and get the space number to pay as we had forgotten to look at it), it got quiet and I heard someone say “up down up down”. I looked around to see where it was coming from and then I looked up. In the building across the street from where I was standing there was a line of windows with a ballerina in each one practicing their exercises. I sure wish I had my camera with me at that moment 🙂

      1. We were meeting friends for dinner. I try not to be too obnoxious and overloaded when we are going out for social events 🙂 BUT there was also a lovely girl who played guitar and sang for us on the Hermosa Beach Pier that night. Another lost opportunity….

  9. I have no idea what ‘lemon tops’ are so please tell me! I have to admit that seaside resorts are not my cup of tea, though I loved them as a child. Some of the shop names can be humorous – like the Almighty Cod 🙂 and I do like the Marine Hotel – lovely architecture and windows.

    1. I dislike them too, Jude, except when they’re empty. This one’s pretty low key.
      Just a soft icecream cone with a dollop of tart lemon (bit like sorbet) on the top 🙂

  12. When I was a child, my favorite seaside treat was cotton candy…loved it! I don’t care for it now, but I do love soft serve chocolate ice cream cones. Thanks for taking us to Seaton, Jo. Loved the photos!

  14. I may have to visit. Is candy floss cotton candy? From the sounds of your description I think it is. At least, that’s what we call it in the States. I’m trying to pick up the lingo 🙂

  17. Now I am a fully fledged biker this looks just the sort of place I should visit on a Bank Holiday Monday 🙂 Seriously, you have painted a great picture of a very traditional looking Enlglish seaside resort. All that is missing is the rain.

    1. You’d better come this morning. It’s gently moist 🙂
      I much prefer the old side of town, The Headland, but Seaton’s nice when it’s quiet. On second thoughts, don’t come today. They’re digging up the promenade on some new project. You know councils and spending! 😦

    1. Some of it has changed Iots, Sue, some, hardly at all. I wouldn’t recommend it right now as they’re doing some kind of project on the promenade and it involves lots of digging. 🙂
