Out of the darkness comes light
It was a night of purest excitement and I haven’t really had chance to share it with you yet. Let’s wander the streets of Tavira on the night that Portugal won the European Cup, against all expectations. It was a great place to be.
I left the excitement briefly and climbed the back streets to look down on the town. There was a ghostly silence. But everywhere was clad in finery.
Suddenly a rousing cheer split the air, and I scurried back to be part of the action. Truly, a night to remember!
Have a great weekend, and make some memories yourself. Maybe share them in six words?

I was so pleased for Portugal. The party celebrations looked like a lot of fun.

The Portuguese were the only people who thought they could do it, Gilda. The atmosphere was incredible (and I don’t even like footie 🙂 )

James had wanted to go to Paris to watch the final with a friend who’s working there, Sue. 🙂 Apparently we got the venue right. It was pretty glum in Paris! He spent the evening texting and making videos to send to his friends. 🙂

You have found yourself a very interesting little town there Jo. I stopped watching football after my sons left home, I find it very boring. Prefer rugby and tennis of course. I would have been quite happy to attend the wine festival though 😀 😀

I love observing celebrations from the outside – a bit more quiet and soothing. It’s fun to see night time scenes. What a lovely town – I think we may be passing through in September. Any recommendations?

Aren’t they pretty? The paper flowers come out for all the celebrations. One of the many things I love about Portugal. 🙂

Oh no! Please do not remind me of the European Cup. When Belgium lost from Wales, I was sick during at least one day… Great pictures though! 🙂

I’m no football fan but I didn’t have much choice. My male companions were super keen. I was mostly busy enjoying the decorations and drinking the wine 🙂 🙂

Was the town decked out like that in expectation or does it always look like this? What a night to be there. I can imagine the celebrations there if I just reverse the level of gloom here when Poland lost!

Whenever there’s a saint’s day or other celebration, the paper flowers come out, Meg. 🙂 They really went to town this time! Leisurely weekend for you? I’ve got James home so much washing/ironing/packing going on but at least it’s sunny. He’s off to Birmingham (of all places!) for the last of his exams next week.

R & M are riding in the vicinity of Malbork. Maja and Jaś with other grandparents (we’re not much use if parents are out of town: how would we call the ambulance? – and Jaś has needed it a few times.) An invigorating drench yesterday. Guitar in the park today – discovered J’s personal history with “Hernando’s hideaway” as a 7 yo. Tomorrow in search of Uprising events on its 72nd anniversary. I’m trying to knock a recalcitrant post about the Uprising into shape for Monday. Enjoy the interstices between James. Birmingham now holds charm for me. For him? Hi birthday weekend girl! How you doing? I was a bit cheesed at all the football going on that week but it was impossible not to be happy for them. Pink flares and dancing on cars! Just like your birthday celebrations, come to think of it. 🙂 🙂

We couldn’t have planned it better, Anabel. In the same day we watched Murray win Wimbledon (at a neighbour’s house- we don’t have TV over there 🙂 ) and then the football. Not at all my thing but my husband and son were extremely happy and the atmosphere was great.

Ashamed to say I didn’t watch all of the final. I was shattered so went to bed after 90 minutes – big surprise in the morning!

I don’t think it would have been possible to sleep in Portugal! 🙂 🙂 There was a wine festival on the riverfront too. 5E for as many samples as you like. There were no customers while the match was on but afterwards… you can imagine! Jumping up and down on car roofs and pink flares going off. Quite mad 🙂 My son had planned to be in Paris for the final so he couldn’t believe his ‘luck’ when they won.

Thanks, Becky! I love that little cul-de-sac. A few times I’ve looked at a ‘do-er upper’ there, a bit wistfully, but neither one of us is really up for it. 🙂 Sunny weekend hugs! Hope the family stuff is coming together.

Hope you having a good weekend too xx
