Clifton windows, Bristol

Who'd live in a house like this? Me, please!

Who’d live in a house like this? Me, please!

I probably shouldn’t, but I never did have any willpower, and I know you’ll want one last Bristol stroll with me.  You do, don’t you?  I promise to keep it short.

We seem to be in a very genteel and affluent area of Bristol but, as I stroll, people are going about their every day, and we nod and exchange smiles.  It’s good to be here.

I am purely following my nose, and hoping that I will arrive somewhere I recognise.  I hadn’t realised that Clifton had such mighty architecture as Royal York Crescent.  Adjoining Clifton Village, it is a Grade II listed terrace of 46 houses.  Allegedly the longest terrace in Europe, building began in 1791 but was not completed until 1820.  What is indisputable is that the views from up here are far reaching.

Clifton Arcade is the very height of temptation.  Small, but perfectly formed, it has ’17 unique shops set in Victorian splendour’. Originally opened in 1878, it then fell into disrepair. Beautifully restored, you can even take a virtual tour on the link I have enclosed, and pop in for coffee at the Primrose Cafe.

A veritable Aladdin's cave of nostalgia

A veritable Aladdin’s cave of nostalgia

I promised to be short, so maybe this is a good time to leave you browsing.  There are modern items alongside the nostalgia.  Have fun, won’t you?  I really do need to go.

For those of you I have confused (sorry, Meg) I have a 2 week laze about in the Algarve, then am home for 6 days before gallivanting off to a wedding in Poland.  Sigh!  The things you have to do to be Restlessjo.  But first I must link to Dawn, who loves lingering at windows.

No more Bristol!  Toodle pip!

  1. Ahh…a feast for the eyes! So tempting and we can’t go in. No!!! I have been there a couple of times on business but alas no time for shopping. Feel even worse now seeing what I missed.

      1. The windows are so beautiful in themselves, a visual treat so perfect for window shopping. I wouldn’t be able to resist going in though and buying a little something here and there for presents, it’s great when you find original unusual gifts for family and friends. Absolutely lovely photos.

  2. Toodle Pip? I think those Georgian splendours have gone to your head Jo. Next thing we know you’ll be wearing a feather boa and smoking black Russian cigarettes. What’s that? You do? Oh, not the cigarettes. You sure tempt me with the thoughts of a Victorian arcade. Apparently Cardiff has some splendid ones too.

An altogether ‘ship-shape and Bristol fashion’ way to bow out for a while. I sure wish I was coming with you, it’s raining here. Again. Have fun!

    1. I do have a feather boa as it happens, but not one of those lovely cloche hats 🙂 It was wet this morning, sunny and windy now. Much needed trip to the hairdressers coming up soon. Take care! 🙂

      1. Rain stopped yet? Hope the ankle/weather doesn’t stop you from getting to your gardens. I have a nice rose garden to visit up here, when I get back. 🙂 Still got my fingers crossed for your homestead.

      2. Rain stopped 20 minutes ago. Peanut and George bouncing around the garden as I type. Hope they don’t escape! No gardens 😦 Too wet and not good for the camera either. Hoping to meet up with Sue tomorrow in ‘her’ walled garden’. It is supposed to be drier! But coffee and cake will make up for the weather. I may even make Nymans on Friday, see how the ankle goes tomorrow! Now to look for those naughty boys.

  3. Love Bristol. Love this. Lived in Cliftin for a year when it was a tatty hippy enclave in the mid 1970s. How things change. Had my first American burger in Carey’s Bar at the end of the Arcade and bought second hand records in the store in 1975. Happy days
