Just a last remnant of Christmas!
On New Year’s Eve I paid a visit to St. Mary’s Church in Whitby. High on the cliff top, the chilly graveyard looks out to sea but, at this time of year, inside the church is bathed in a warm glow.
It’s the light of numerous Christmas trees, contributed by the community, and a huge boost to the church funds. If you’re lucky you might even catch a carol service.
A last dusting of WordPress snow sets them off rather nicely. I saw a little of the real thing on the road across the Moors- but not much! I guess you know now where my Monday walk will be taking us next week? Winter woollies will be required.
Until then, enjoy your weekend, and don’t forget to call in on Cate at Show My Face. You wouldn’t want her to play Six Word Saturday all alone, would you?

My favourites are the hedgehogs. And of course you’ve spotted an owl!

There are lots of craft shops within the town, Seonaid, and they’re all more than happy to take part in the Christmas festivities at the church. It makes for a lovely atmosphere. 🙂

Love the owl and hedgehog, though its their fiber that interests me.😉

They’re made of all kinds, aren’t they? The businesses in the town all contribute and it makes for lots of variety- some traditional, some less so. 🙂

That’s nice to know, Gillena. This one is a lovely church, though Dracula is said to haunt the graveyard. Very happy 2015 to you 🙂

Love the hedgehogs! And for taking me inside the church, I have been there, but not inside. And I saw some lovely owl cushions the other day which made me think of you, though it’s not you who is the owl fanatic is it? A blogging friend? Anyway they were so sweet even I almost bought one. I said ALMOST! I look forward to a brisk walk on Monday Jo, too wet and soggy here to venture out today 😦

It was damp here early on but the sun has now made an appearance, Jude. 🙂 Too late to venture far- I’ve been watching Rafa for the past hour or two. What a luxury! I’d forgotten how 🙂
I’m plagued by owl cushions! They were in the museum last week too. It’s Gemma at First and Fabulous who loves them, and I have a real treat for her in the walk the week after next. It was going to be this weeks but I wanted to keep all the Christmas stuff together so Whitby it is. The church is well worth a look inside, Jude. I never saw anywhere quite like it.

Oh, I remember Whitby! [H rushes off to pull an ageing album off the shelf] Yes! There’s the Parish Church! Too early for all this Christmas fabulousness (September) but still exciting to make a connection to the past. 🙂

It’s one of the venues for the Goths. They’re big business in the town these days and Dracula’s graveyard always gets a few visits. 🙂 More to follow on Monday 🙂

It will be a bit sad to see the lovely Christmas decorations come down. These are beautiful. But next year’s will be just as nice and something to look forward to. 🙂
I have decided to join the Six Word Saturday. 🙂

How beautiful! And I am suddenly reminded that once upon a time I used to go to the New Year’s Eve service at church. The church was never as beautifully decorated at this though!

All the local businesses take part, Ann, and it brings in lots of people. It’s a really nice place to visit in the Christmas period (and extremely atmospheric year round- it is, after all, Dracula’s church 🙂 ).

I love the reindeer that’s looking up, presumably at the falling snow 🙂 🙂 They’re very tactile, aren’t they? I’m leaving my tree till Monday. They start to look a bit forlorn after a while but I’m still reluctant.

What a lovely idea to ask the community to contribute Christmas trees – I imagine the church must be beautiful. I love the little hedgehogs. 🙂
