Jo’s Monday walk and some scarecrows
The scarecrows ‘speak for themselves’ , but I thought I would take this opportunity to introduce my Monday walks page. I’ve been posting Jo’s Monday walks since March and they’ve had a wonderful response. I’m very grateful for all your support, and thought it was time I constructed a page to explain a few details. A click on my new logo will take you to the page.
Speaking of logos, you won’t forget to visit Cate at Show My Face, will you? She’ll be waiting expectantly for your Six word Saturdays. Whether you’re chasing scarecrows, out walking or just relaxing at home, I hope you have a happy Saturday.

So…why were all these out and about? They are neat but not sure why they are out. Thanks for sharing!

Scarecrow festivals are a strange English custom, Dawn 🙂 Two of our local villages compete every June and it’s always fun to see. I’ve posted about them in previous years so I guess I assumed people would recognise what was going on. Sorry!

Thanks for the big smile …. just wonderful, but I wonder if the crows think they are scary enough. *smile – nothing wrong with the imagination in the village. This post has so much feel good. The gnome is the most scary thing of them all. Just brilliant, Jo!

I agree with you about the gnome, Vivi 🙂 He should have been disqualified!
The villagers are all out to chat and it’s a really nice event. The weather was even kind this year! Weekend hugs back, darlin.

So it happen in your village … I think it’s a brilliant and fun idea. I missed that bit. Gnome shouldn’t be allowed in with all those classy scarecrow.

The horse and poor rider get my vote. These are clever and whimsical. Ron & I will be in Paris for 12 days in Sept. Have never been. Our paths are almost crossing, Jo. Love the Monday walks and the work and effort you are putting into sponsoring them. You have made it easy for me to discover other worthy walkers/bloggers this way. Many thanks.

You’ve always been wonderfully supportive of my efforts, Lynne, and I appreciate it very much.
I doubled up laughing when I saw the horse and rider! And the swimmer diving in the lily pond’s a favourite too.
I was in Paris for just a couple of days when I was 20, Lynne, but Michael has never been. We’re going primarily to visit Giverny and Versailles. Anything else is a bonus 🙂

Elwick is a lovely village to walk round at any time, Amy, but the Scarecrow Festival is a lot of fun. Thanks, hon 🙂

What kind of a wacky place you live in :D. I wonder if any of these could work on my pigeons. Very entertaining, Jo. I like your widget and I will display it when I decide to join you for your walk. I am afraid it will wait till August or till you come back from Paris. Do you have the dates and hotel yet?

It is a bit of a strange world, I admit, Paula 🙂
Glad you like the widget. I just wanted something simple so it was either that one or the footprint in the sand. Join me whenever you can, hon. I know your schedule is a nightmare.
Paris is 9th to 14th August but I really haven’t looked at hotels since we last spoke about it. Must do that in the next day or two.

Yes, you’d better hurry, sometimes the most attractive locations are booked months in advance :S Are you walking a lot this weekend?

I zumba’d this morning. Watching Rafa at Wimbledon right now. I seldom have time for walking at weekends. Mondays and Thursdays are my usual days. I still have a couple of Algarve walks to post before we’re back to the UK. 🙂

Your posts of idiosyncratic village life make me wonder what I’m missing in my neck of the woods. I’ll eager to go back and find out!

It’s surprising what goes on when you look around, Meg. One of the things I love so much about the Algarve is the number of festivals and events that go on. Here, we’re a little more subject to the weather 🙂

What fun scarecrows! Although I now have the Ugly Bug Ball song in my head… And a happy time we’ll have there, one and all at the ugly bug ball!

The lady who made the bugs is partially sighted, Emma, and it had taken her 6 weeks. It’s a really nice village at any time but especially when the scarecrows visit. 🙂

It’s wonderful the way people participate in these village events
Lol Jo … The rider flopped over the jump reminds me of the Thelwell Pony cartoons and John Betjeman’s poem Hunter Trials https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpTcUVh514g…
Lovely fun pics … have a great weekend Jo 🙂

It’s a lovely village anyway, Poppy, but when the scarecrows come to town, everyone’s out chatting. Thanks for the clip 🙂 I’m focused on Rafa right now but I’ll be back later to check it out.

These scarecrow makers have great imaginations! I remember seeing a village years ago where they did something like this – I thought they must have a great sense of community.

This event takes place every June, Elaine, and is a contest between two villages. My photos are from the losers as I didn’t make it to the other village. They must have been brilliant. 🙂

My aunt, the one of the apple pie fame, told me that there was a scarecrow competition in her rural township this year. All the community was enthusiastic about it, I think. At her nursing home, the residents and staff put together ‘A Bananas in Pyjamas’ scarecrow. Great fun.

‘Flobbelop little weeeed !’ Ah, Bill and Ben, I remember them well, waited till the gardener left for his lunch then sprang to life and had a chat with the little weed for fifteen minutes. Returned to being plant pots when the gardener returned. Amazing displays. Which village is this Jo ?

Elwick again, David. We didn’t have time to make it to Castle Eden as well this year. We visited Sunday teatime and they were already starting to take down some of them. We found the lady with the blue frock in a dustbin and I had to prop her up again. No wonder she looks so disapproving! 🙂

The lady who made the bugs was only partially sighted, Viv. When we happened along last Sunday teatime, she was wrestling with a pair of scissors, trying to cut them out of the hedge without damaging her plants. We just had to stop and help. She was very sweet! 🙂
