The beginnings of an English Summer

Love them or hate them, you can't ignore a windmill

Love them or hate them, you can’t ignore a windmill!

Even a traditional one

Even a very traditional one

Everywhere you look, there's blossom!

This year, blossom is everywhere

And the goslings are thriving

The goslings seem to be thriving

Tulip power!

And tulips rule!

The boldness of the iris

Irises are exotic

Lace curtains of

Wisteria form lovely curtains of lace

The fragrance of lilac

Lilac is fragrant

Whiter than white!

And white blossom scintillates!

On the Moors, flamboyant colour

On the Moors, flamboyant grasses wave

And in my own garden

And in my own garden, something pretty appears

Despite my head still being full of visions of Poland, my days are spent gazing at a very English landscape.  Already this year I’ve had breakfast in the garden, one of my favourite aspects of Summer.  It’s still only May, and a Bank Holiday weekend, so I shouldn’t be too despondent if the rain has arrived.  There’s still plenty of promise, don’t you think?

    1. The one in the photo isn’t far from me, Elaine. I can see the tip of the sails out of the back bedroom window. I thought it looked superb surrounded by rape as I walked back from t’ai chi at Hart Village the other day. 🙂

    1. Tiny hint of brightness, David! I’m hoping for better tomorrow because we’re walking at Carlton Bank but I’m not too certain. Fingers tightly crossed 🙂 Thanks!
      Spoilt your plans?

  2. Love the traditional windmills and fragrance of the wisteria and lilac, Jo. Enjoy those warm (not hot) days while you can. I spent the entire day on our verandah …just soaking in the warmth, the ocean breeze and reading.

    1. Idyllic day, Lynne. Now I want to see your view, please 🙂
I should never post sunny photos. Sitting under a huge wet Bank Holiday cloud these last couple of days, but it was wonderful while it lasted. Have a lovely Sunday!.

  4. These are lovely photos: I so miss the sight of rape fields (but not the hay fever that goes with that time of year). 🙂

  5. Jo, your flowers are glorious! I love the wisteria, lilacs, the white blossoms, the exotic irises and the modern and traditional windmills. It looks like you’re having perfect English days. The grasses on the Moors bring to mind Heathcliff & Catherine. How romantic. 🙂

    1. This post was the ‘kiss of death’ Cathy. We’ve sat under a Bank Holiday rain cloud for the past 3 days, but feel free to imagine me in the sunshine, singing Kate’s song 🙂 Hope life is bringing you sunshine. (that makes me sound like Morecambe and Wise! Not the one with the short, fat, hairy legs 🙂 )

      1. Oh dear, I’m sorry the post was your “kiss of death,” Jo. I don’t want to rub it in, but we have a three-day weekend too for Memorial Day, and the weather has been glorious. “Bank holiday” – yet another British term!! You’re always trying to keep me on my toes, Jo. 🙂 By the way, who are Morcambe and Wise??

      2. I’m falling out of my chair laughing! Not good when you have a mouthful of cheese and crackers and a glass of red! 🙂 I was sure you would know Morecambe and Wise! They were an elderly comedy duo with a very long running TV show. At the end of the programme they used to sing “Bring me sunshine”. You’ll just have to Google it, Cathy. I’m laughing too much 🙂

      3. You are so funny, Jo! I think I got some of the wine you spit out all over me!! I’m sorry, I wasn’t always so cultured that I watched British TV shows; it’s only been in the last 20 years or so that I’ve become a fan. I’ll sing for you Jo: “Bring Jo sunshine!!”

    1. It’s Clematis Florida Siboldii, Ad 🙂 Gorgeous, isn’t it? I was a bit worried about it cos it had gone all straggly but it’s out in the rain and seems perfectly happy.

  6. Superb photos Jo and what a gorgeous clematis you have growing in your garden. Last Saturday was glorious here, but today it has been miserable. Although there is some blue sky now it is still rather cool. I have been chalking up some walks though, and hope to continue once the weather improves. It has to doesn’t it?

    1. Such a shame that last weekend was beautiful when so many people look forward to their long weekends off work. Cold and drizzly here and not really set to improve. I’m hoping it’ll be dry enough to get out on Monday.
Look forward to your walks 🙂

  7. This looks very promising Jo 🙂 I would like to join you on your veranda and absorb these views 😀 Did you make it to the cafe on Friday? 😉

    1. It is absolutely pouring, Paula! Definitely not garden weather 🙂 In the UK I put a lounger chair on the grass and sit and admire when I can, but only that last clematis is mine. The others are from my wanders round and about.
Friday was wet so I did housework catchup and t’ai chi. Today I met a friend at a cafe in our marina. Tomorrow cooking and boring stuff (and more rain!) Monday- a walk and freedom! 🙂
      Have a happy weekend!

  8. Oh indeed I love them. Out last visit to England was in June, and it was superb. Windmills are beautiful too, as are all these lovely flowers. Such an enchanting post, as many of my flowers are green and beginning, but not blossoming yet!
