Today I’ve chosen a Header Photo
Maybe you remember that last week my Header was a plain, bold black? During the week I’ve tinkered about a bit and come to a few conclusions. In the main, I’m happy with the plain Header, because I usually start my post with a photo, and there’s more impact this way. But for a post like this, where I start with a logo, I think a photo looks better.
This generates its own problems, because the writing on the Header is white, and I cannot change the colour unless I pay to customise it. So, I need to use a fairly dark toned photo for the writing to show up. This limits my choice a little, but I’ve enjoyed playing with the Headers, and I expect you’ll be seeing more. I’ll have to change it with each post or it won’t match, and if you visit another of my posts after this one, that won’t match either! (for anyone missing my old Town Wall header photo, it’s now consigned to my Flickr photos, in the sidebar)
Next week, the problem of Menus and Categories. Do many of you use them? If not, how do you go about finding posts?
As often happens, I’m using my Six word Saturday in a slightly unconventional way. But it’s interesting, isn’t it? Well, I hope you think so. Cate at Show My Face will have lots of variations on the theme, so don’t forget to click on the link or the logo to join in.

Hello! I wish you a happy and successful new week.

Jo, I really love your new header image. It works perfectly with the black background and it sets off the white letters of the header nicely. And it’s so YOU!! Good job!
I’m headed out for a nautical-type outing myself today: Annapolis, Maryland. I hope it’ll be a good day for pictures. 🙂

Thanks, Cathy. I have quite a few headers from my playing about so we’ll see how it goes.
It’s clear, bright and cold again here today. Hope it’s the same for you 🙂 Enjoy your visit!

I like the bridge header too, Jo. It was a nice day today; I even ditched my coat. It was a little overcast though… Holding out for sunshine and blue skies. 🙂

I like the new header. Does it matter about matching the other posts, OK, I try and upload a separate one for all mine, and my pages and….but you can do this on suits as far as I noticed. You could say that Hartlepool wasn’t relevant to the Algarve. You’ve changed the blog style, nothing wrong with having a different header photo, whether it is relevant to the post shouldn’t matter. (although it does to me, and I will spend ages fiddling sometimes). The Algarve is a part of your blog. What better header?

This header is Hartlepool marina, Rough 🙂 I hate that when I pop across to, say, Flowers for Jake, it doesn’t look right. I absolutely don’t want a photo header on that one. I spent much longer finding a header photo to suit the 6WS post than I did writing the post, which is totally wrong, and I don’t much like the post anyway! I quite like the rolling style where the header changes through a series of half a dozen. Trouble is I know exactly what I like but don’t want to pay for it, and I’m not half as clever as I’d like to be. It’s been an interesting exercise though, and lots of advice pouring in.
I have got some great header shots now (in my humble opinion 🙂 ) but I think they’ll be used sparingly. What I really want to do is separate my Home from Abroad but that involves using menus or two separate blogs and then I’ll really come unstuck. Fun learning, though.

There is a bell tower, and something else that looks ‘foreign’! I should have got it from the building on the left though that doesn’t look Algarve 😀
Vicky’s has a rolling style. So does mine but I don’t use it because I figure the water pic suits roughseas if I don’t do a specific header post. Sometimes I’ve changed it for whatever reason, often national day. But you certainly don’t need to pay for rolling headers.
Menus are easy. You already have the pages. You just write a new page, and click on a parent menu. Try it. Or look at mine, recipes is prob the best example. If you want a separate blog, just make sure you leave the link fairly prominently on restlessjo. A few souls follow all of mine (!). Most follow two, and some follow three. I actually think your blog works well as it is, because it provides variety. For single themed blogs you actually need to be sure that your main readership is unhappy with the current one, and therefore there is a need to split the topics. i don’t get that impression, yours seems to work well as it is. Depends what you are trying to achieve though.

That’s the key, Rough! What am I trying to achieve? Good question 🙂
Hey Jude gave me some Menus advice and it looked complicated to this simple soul but I think that’s where I’m going next. Maintaining the pages is a headache and I don’t think they’re used enough to warrant it. Thanks for your thoughts.

I spent more time on the header than the post, Christine. 😦 I do like it but I hate going to another page and it doesn’t match. Didn’t know I was a perfectionist! 🙂

:). I like your header picture, Jo. Microsoft Paint may be in your computer as it is a freeby that doesn’t expire unless you pay to upgrade. That is what I use to blacken out faces, license plates, and other personal stuff. LIKE VIV SAID, don’t override your original. Do a ‘save as’ and change the file name a bit. I add at the end a [a], [b], etc. or like [cropped] et al.
I liked your picture walking tour today. No pictures from me as I am checking out my latest computer. Big learning curve here because it has Windows 8.

You could fix your picture with text using ‘Picasa’, a free download. I use that also.

Thanks, Jude. 🙂 Might I ask why? I haven’t used Flickr since they told me my free allocation was full and I’d have to pay. Then, strangely, they let me upload the Town Wall photo. I don’t understand, but then you know I’m a little low on understanding. I have quite a lot of photos in there.

Because Yahoo (Flickr) keep changing things around and it is not as intuitive or easy to keep in touch with others as it used to be, and because Yahoo screwed up with the mail accounts, BT have parted company and set up their own BT Mail, withdrawing from Flickr which was part of the free service with BT Broadband. Which I use.
Now if you have a Pro account through BT (which it seems you probably didn’t) you have to create a new Yahoo Id to link to Flickr, otherwise you lose your account! And they no longer offer a Pro account unless you pay.
They have made changes to the free account including 1 TB space, which will be why you can now add more photos. But you will see adverts too. Which I didn’t before all the changes. I just think both BT and Yahoo have handled this so badly and that lots of people may end up losing access to their Flickr accounts.
Rant over!

Thanks for that 🙂 🙂 I had observed something was going on with Yahoo (which I never normally use but I keep being invited to link to things via Yahoo as an option to FB or Twitter) Don’t think there’s anyone in the world more low tech than me. Well, maybe on a Pacific island somewhere.

You can customise your header photo without paying anything! Open ithe photo with Paint and click on the big letter A in the menu. Draw yourself a text box with the cursor, choose Font, type size (BIG!) and colour (keep background transparent) and type in your text/title. Click outside the box, then save your picture with a different title from the original. Simply download the photo onto your WordPress settings page.

Oh my! You’re even cleverer than I thought, Viv. Not at all sure what you mean by opening the photo with Paint. In Photoshop? I presume you do this for your haiku on a pictorial background (can’t remember the proper name) 🙂
LikeLike
Haiga, yes. Paint is not Photoshop. When you right click on the picture in your files you get a menu. Scroll down to Open With – scroll right to a selection of programmes. Choose Paint and click. You’re off.

Thanks, Viv. Jim was kindly trying to point me in the right direction too. But you know, it annoys me so much when I go to another post and the header doesn’t match. I suppose I should find a neutral one. 🙂
