Something about the light

Almost every morning I climb the stairs to my roof terrace. I look out over the roof tops and salt marshes to the far horizon and catch my breath. Not from exertion, but the sunlight, glinting on the water, pierces my eyes and my heart. It dazzles me each and every time. There’s something about the quality of the light here. It illuminates my world, casting a spell, and I’m drawn to seek out the heavens, reflected in the water.

Somewhere that I can lose myself for a little while, hiding from a reality I’m powerless to change. Where sky meets sea is my escape. A lightening of heart, even when the spirit is low. The light changes with the hour, brilliant at midday and softer as the afternoon fades.

Some of these places are denied to me right now, but I know that they’re there, quietly waiting.

Thanks, Amy, for sharing your beautiful light.

  1. A very beautiful natural light collection and eloquently expressed. “It illuminates my world, casting a spell,…” poetical, indeed. I love the blue, sunlight… of these photos, and these reflections are breathtaking. Thank you, Jo!

  2. Wow, just look at those beautiful, fluffy clouds, Jo! I was very much fascinated by salt marches during our visit to Faro many years ago. It was a wonderful place to visit to see the beauty of the Portugal coastline. We saw lots of wildlife and birds whilst walking around, including flamingoes. Wish we had visited the islands too, maybe next time. Thanks for sharing and have a good day. Aiva 🙂 xxx

  3. Your lovely soft light makes me that much more sad that our visit last year was, of course, cancelled. I loved your closing thought that the light in faraway places will still be there waiting for us when traveling returns. How wonderful that you have such a beautiful start to your mornings!

    1. I’m sitting up on the roof terrace now, Tina, but it’s a bit higgledy piggledy because husband has been painting up here. I have one eye on the view and one on my Portuguese lesson. I should be better at this by now 🤗💕

  4. For me, these images seem so natural – hello – that’s the theme! …. I found myself focusing on the 4th one – the second large image – all that blue seemed to capture the day and the moment for me. But then you closed out the series with the drastic and beautiful time of dusk. Brilliantly crafted, Jo!

  5. Beautiful photos and words Jo. So true that dazzling skies and brilliant blues can brighten up an otherwise grey mood. And yes, all these gorgeous places are there waiting for you. Sending hugs. xx 😎🌟

      1. I don’t think there will be much travel this summer. We have booked some very cheap flights to Sicily in October on the understanding that if we can’t go then we haven’t lost a lot of money.

    1. The ferry terminal out to the Ilha, Brian. Taboo till 5th April, we believe. I set off to walk out there yesterday afternoon but the signboards are still up- no walking area! 😦 Thanks, darlin!

    1. Someone has messaged me overnight about a tuna documentary they have seen, they think in Lagos or Faro. The way they have described it, it doesn’t sound like one of the ones I know about. Wondering if you might recognise the description

“we had by chance seen a wonderful documentary about Tuna fishing in Portugal ( either from Lagos or Faro, I cannot remember which).
I remember that the fish would migrate twice a year close in shore in May and August. The whole village would be involved. Men would go out in the bay and using tin cans with glass would shout when the first of the fish would pass below them. Not far off shore boats in a large circle would slowly pull up the huge net and using long poles would swing the fish over their heads to boats immediately behind. Eventually the fish would be delivered for gutting etc to womenfolk waiting on the quay. It was very much a carnival atmosphere”

  6. I can see why this seascape pierces your soul. There’s something about these landscapes, with their mighty unending scope that does it for us – with me it’s mountains, though seascapes enthrall me too. Have a lovely day with at least glimpses of your chosen Happy Place.
