I don’t know about you, but Cee has been making me smile throughout this series of October Squares by increasing the number of items in her daily squares. Before it all gets out of hand I thought I’d share 18 corks, as my contribution on this, the 18th October. Becky has thoughtfully linked my generous portions of cake to her Squares roundup today, and if you’re going to visit them all you might well need a glass of the good Portuguese stuff by the end. Have a great Sunday!
A great series of squares, Jo!

I notice you commented that you recycle your corks, Jo. What do you do with them?
LikeLike
They go to a recycling centre, Carol. I don’t actually know what happens there or how they are turned into reusable items. Perhaps I should find out. I did use to collect them myself because i found them attractive objects in a vase or jar, but it got a bit out of hand π π

Hard to find wine with a cork here unless itβs bubbly. I do miss those cock collections people seemed to have; but I do t miss fishing g broken bits of cork out of my wine ππ

That’s a pet hate of mine too, Su, but we try to stay loyal to the cork industry here π π

Understandably! I wonder about the environmental credential of our wine industry with its metal caps, but itβs enough to make a girl need a drink.

If you have little kids, then one of the best things you can make out of corks are stamps. Just draw a design at the one end and carefully carve it out. They don’t turn out to be as pretty and clean as the ones from the shop, but it’s the crafting process that countsπππ

I love your corks photo. I’m stumped at 17. I’m thinking about setting up my studio so I can make number combinations for the remaining combinations. See how many I can come up with that are different.

I already had the corks photo as a potential one for the challenge. As I was looking through the media library this morning I looked at it, counted the corks, and thought… aha! π€£π Maybe some eggs or a fruit stall?

I’m sitting here wondering how long it took you to arrange these corks so that they didn’t collapse. Glue, pins, or just your beady eye fixed on them with a threat behind it. I used to dye mine and I kept them in a huge brandy glass – remember when the vogue was for big brandy glasses with a cat hanging off the side looking down at a mouse in the glass? Well, I had one of those – as well as a lava lamp!

Yes I remember, Mari. I can claim none of the credit for this arrangement. They are part of a display at a local restaurant π€π

I used to collect corks (there are so many varieties!) but after some time I realised that they were just taking up too much space, so out they went. Of course sometimes I wish I hadn’t got rid of them.

Perhaps I missed a trick and should have made cork bags/sandals etc! Now you mention it I have seen things like that made from cork, but they seemed to be sheets of cork rather than pieces that might have come from wine bottles.

Fresh cork is pressed and compacted so I can see how that works, but I have no clue what they do to recycle the corks. π π

Not virtuous at all, Jo (who, me?) – I just decided a few years ago enough was enough! And my two bottles a night were playing havoc with my hand-eye coordination! π
Water or tonic water for me now… I’m easily pleased.
I wish you a great Sunday too, Jo.
