Jo’s Monday walk : Carvoeiro Boxes

In complete contrast to Saturday’s post, I’m sun-dazzled in Carvoeiro today.  Not my favourite place in the Algarve but, after the enormous success of my Street Art in Silves, I made it a mission to visit Carvoeiro for more of the same.  Most of its charm fled with the influx of tourism, but in winter months you might still catch a glimmer.  Just don’t attempt it in high summer!

You can forgive a lot with street art like this, can’t you?  I wandered through the centre, beaming at each new find.

Do you have a favourite yet?  I confess a weakness for the frog.  A handsome prince if ever I saw one.

The background can enhance or distract, the musculature of Ronaldo seeming a little out of place beside that delicate chimney.  But he’s everywhere in Portugal. Sometimes it’s good to see things in context, like this box outside the mosaic shop.  And the lovely azulejo panel of the bay.

Just a morsel of cake.  Not my preferred choice but very nice.  However disparaging I may be about Carvoeiro, there’s a place just along the coast that never fails to delight me, even though commercialism has done its worst.  The awe I felt when I first saw Algar Seco remains.

Fashioned by the raw power of the sea, the convoluted shapes and whorls cast a spell.  A gentle whoosh, or a blast and a roar!  The ocean always keeps you on your toes.  You can follow the boardwalk along the cliff top to take in the views, or descend to peer through the lattice of holes.

The painted electricity boxes were there too.  I hope you enjoyed them.

I’ve tried to catch up with as many of you as I can.  Please give me a nudge if I’ve missed you.  It’s meltingly hot in the Algarve right now, so I’m glad of those cooler weeks in the UK.  Many thanks for your company and contributions.  Feel free to join me next time here on Jo’s Monday walk.

Hope you’re having a wonderful Bank Holiday in the UK, and wishing you all a great week ahead.  I’m still battling gently with the new phone, but I had some great news yesterday.  My son proposed to his lovely lady, on holiday in Barcelona, and she said ‘si’.  🙂

  1. I can’t believe how many colorful boxes there are here! You’ve captured them all well. I like the one you featured in context especially, the box outside the mosaic shop. Thanks too for the link, Jo. Enjoy your week. 🙂

  2. They are fabulous Joanne. My favourites would be the ones with flowers and the ladybird. Thanks for participating and congratulations on your son’s engagement 🙂

  3. A wonderful, colourful walk, Jo. Hard to pick a favourite, but I like the jellyfish and the donkey and the opening blossom shot. I also enjoyed your context shot – that box fits its surroundings perfectly. And I have a soft spot for nivea too – it really works that well!!! A large pot of it is one of my travel essentials 🙂

  4. Maybe too much of a good thing? They seem very obvious now, whereas left boring grey or mucky white you may not see them all. We stayed in Carvoeiro on our first holiday together – October 2002! Just after I’d moved to Shrewsbury. We stayed in a hotel just outside of the town and didn’t really go into it except to catch a bus. We did walk along those amazing cliffs though and even eyed-up quite a nice residential place with pretty tiles on the stairs. Probably a holiday resort, but it looked nice then.

Meanwhile I do actually have a walk for you today! One taken on Saturday whilst waiting for the boy to get seen to. I could have walked further, but the phone signal is not the greatest along coastal Cornwall!! Nice to be back home? Despite the heat? It is hot in most of the UK still, trust you to miss it 😂 Not here of course. Cornwall is a different country.

    1. I had a link from you this morning to an older post on Gorjoes. Thought it must be a glitch. Mick’s off playing tennis _with a limp, daft man _and I’m expecting company so I’ll have a read later. Thank you! Blessed clouds here today! As I said to Meg, I appear to be an English person, like it or not 🤣☔💕

      1. I was checking out old posts last night, maybe that’s why you got the link. I must admit I am not a fan of very hot weather – just give me temperatures where I can wear a t-shirt and skirt and potter about outdoors and I am happy 🙂

  5. The boxes are all so colourful Jo it’s hard to pick a favourite! I do like the first one in the soft blues with the birds and pretty pink blossom but then I love the animal motifs such as the donkey too. Thanks so much again for including my walk this week 🙂 Many congratulations on the exciting family news yesterday! How exciting! Things settling down here at long last (well sort of!). Mlle in London will know later this week the extent of her knee damage but the medicos seem to think it is an ACL injury which is not good 😦 Wishing you a lovely week ahead – it has certainly got off to a good start! xx 🙂 🙂

    1. Hope it turns out well for Mlle. Sad because she loves her active life. (Mick is off to play tennis this morning, despite a few problems of his own. Must be hell being an athlete but I’ll neverr know 🙂 )
      Thanks, hon!

      1. I know it’s a real shame for her Jo – she is such an active person so having to slow down is hard. She’s skipped a music and dance festival today as dancing is not possible at present 😦 Netball is really bad for knees especially if you play centre as she does and surfing isn’t the best either though she loves the ocean! She loved her recent trip to Ericeira even though she couldn’t surf. She met some really nice people and enjoyed relaxing by the pool 🙂 I used to play tennis but then my back was dodgy so I walk now and do regular Pilates – active but not like an athlete! We’ll start planning how to manage her rehab once she knows the extent of the injury. Fortunately her boss is understanding (she’s been there abut 3 and a half years now) as she’ll need time off for physio etc. Have a lovely week 🙂

    1. Different artists involved, Denzil, with differing interests. I tried tracking some of them when I found the boxes in Silves, but without much success. I need someone to take it up locally 🙂 🙂

  6. I love these boxes, so many and so varied. They have tired a similar thing in Brynmill where I live but there are only a handful of them and they are all a bit “samey” on the theme of Dylan Thomas. These are far more varied and jolly!
