Six word Saturday

Does anyone out there understand Gravatar?

Following on from my Six word Saturday last week, I was prompted to ask.  You see, I’ve never understood the concept of Gravatar very well.

Having decided that ‘likes’ were swamping my Inbox, and that neither myself nor my laptop were coping well, I thought that I might return some of my visits by clicking on a Gravatar.  This works in some instances, but often I find that the Gravatar is not linked to a website.  What is the purpose of a Gravatar if not to display the sources where a person can be contacted?  An email address and a photo is of no help in this context.

Not sure what my own Gravatar would reveal, I took a quick look.  Relief!  The website is there, so you can find me, if you need to.  And now I’ll carry on and entertain you with a few orchids, in one of our loveliest stately homes, Burton Agnes, in North Yorkshire.

The carvings and wood panelling are quite extraordinary, I think you’ll agree.  Both house and gardens will repay a visit, if you get the chance.  Meantime, don’t forget to share six words with Debbie.  She’s in reflective mood this week.  Wishing you a happy Saturday!

  1. Gravitate seemed useful in the days when I administered multiple blogs and I could link them all in one place. Now it just seems an extra (unnecessary) layer of complexity. It’s frustrating when you get to one and find no links at all, I agree. I used to Google, now I just give up. When I do find a blog I like I use Feedly to follow it then I don’t have to bother with WordPress nonsense at all.

    Stunning orchids!

      1. I’m sure I would! And I really like Feedly – you can follow blogs from all platforms, organise them into subjects and it shows you the latest unread posts from each one. And when you’re pressed for time, just swipe and mark all as read! I used that quite a lot on holiday when I knew I would never catch up.

  2. Not a clue about Gravatar and when I’ve tried clicking n a Gravatar I seem to hit a blank, i.e. the profile doesn’t show up. On another puzzle, when I hit Comment, nothing happens. I have to hit See all Comments before I’m taken to the site. The mysteries of WP
Incidentally, I’ve just been diagnosed with WMD (macular degeneration) so computer work, not to mention life in general, is tough at the moment. If I don’t check in regularly, it’s not because I’m not reading you, it’s because I have to leave your Posts until I get a ‘good moment’ with the eyes. I’m coping – just.

    1. That’s rotten news, Mari! Yours is one of the blogs I struggle with, and when I find you I rarely know which is your most recent post. But you’re worth the extra effort and I’m very sorry for your health issues. Sending hugs xx

  3. Jo this is a user issue. Not you but in how people configure their Gravatar. I used to message people to let them know but haven’t done so recently. I honestly think people don’t know how to do it or that they should. It’s like bloggers who have their tweets preset to WordPress.com rather than their own Twitter handle. It all takes learning doesn’t it.

    1. It does, Sue. My first comment today suggested that the process is too complicated and that WP might focus on improving it and the appearance of the page rather than some of the changes they make. I remember trying to change the photo on my Gravatar and struggling so I’ll be stuck with this one till I’m 90. 🙂 🙂

  4. Orchids are gorgeous flowers, and you present them in a wonderful way, Jo. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
As to gravatars: I share your thoughts. All too often you won’t be able to find the blog from there. That reminds me: I need to check mine.
    Have a wonderful weekend,
    Pit

    1. Yours is fine, Pit, as I suspected it would be. 🙂 🙂 I’m having a lazy afternoon because my husband’s gone to ‘the match’ and it’s raining. I might even break out some chocolate. 🙂 Thanks for enjoying the day with me.

      1. Here, it’s another bright sunny day, with temps expected to be in the lower 90s. Talking of “match(es)” I’ll be watching German soccer later. I’m happy I can get selected matches live on tv here.

  5. Gorgeous photos of gorgeous flowers, I love the white ones at the top, and the intricate wood carving is wonderful 🙂

I’ve finally, after almost two weeks of late nights, managed to update my camping blog with my recent travels round Anglesey, so I should be able to catch up with yours properly now 🙂

    1. A lazy weekend, maybe? It is a really lovely place. We were there last summer, about the time of their jazz festival, and didn’t go inside, but when I saw a snowdrop walk and orchid festival advertised in February it was a must. 🙂 🙂

  6. Gravatar is your sort of ID on the World wide Web Jo. I am updated with
all my blog links in it. One can always choose to click it when you want to view a blog but not all are updated. Nice flowers by the way.

  7. I ‘get’ the beautiful orchids but I have no idea if my gravatar does what it should. I think I set it up properly long ago but who knows. WordPress likes to fiddle with things all the time.

    Lovely flowers and post, though.

    1. It would be great if everyone was linked to it properly, Ruth, but I seem to remember it being complicated. I tried to change mine once and got in a muddle. 🙂 🙂 Thanks! Gorgeous, aren’t they?

    1. And a wonderful stately home. 🙂 🙂 I was playing my usual Saturday game… think of what you want to say and then bend some photos to suit. I’m using up stuff in an attempt to reduce my folders, Sue. We were there for the snowdrops and orchid show in February. Enjoy your busy weekend!

      1. Looks like a lovely place for a visit! Just having a rest before my friends arrive! Got some of the food ready, but the rest will have to wait….

  9. Beautiful flowers, paneling and architecture, Jo. Very refreshing feel to these photos 🙂 It is annoying when Gravatar doesn’t come up with much. Personally I don’t click on it and if I’m interesting in a comment or a blogger, I’d click on their name and it will take me to their blogs and hopefully they will have an About me page there 🙂

    1. That’s the problem, Mabel- when clicking on a name doesn’t take you to the blog. Non WordPress or personalised blogs sometimes don’t. I have a few people whose blogs I like very much but I have to go a roundabout route or even use Google search to get there. 🙂 🙂 It’s a lovely house! We were there last summer and again for the snowdrops in February.

      1. That is annoying when you can’t find a blog. You try much harder than me, Jo. If I can’t find the blog on one click, I’m usually off and away 😀 For the blogs I like, I will always remember the website of the blog 🙂 🙂 Happy travels ahead, Jo ❤

  10. Not sure I understand Gravatar too well either Jo. There are some sites that when you click on the person’s photo you can’t seem to access their blog and you have to go searching for it, which of course will reduce visits. Yours seems to work fine to me! What a stunning set of photos – the orchids with the wood carvings are amazing! Have a lovely weekend 🙂

    1. My point exactly, Rosemay. Glad it’s not just me. 🙂 🙂 I did look at the ‘Help’ section on WP but it wasn’t…. much 🙂 It’s a lovely place! I was there in February with the snowdrops and just remembered the photos.

  11. Gravatar is a mess. I have figured it out, but many don’t seem to know how to configure it. Instead of changing things about the Reader or app, etc, the WP team should focus their energy on revamping Gravatar. Making it simpler and updating the look of the profile pages. It’s totally outdated.
