Six word Saturday

Does anyone out there understand Gravatar?

Following on from my Six word Saturday last week, I was prompted to ask.  You see, I’ve never understood the concept of Gravatar very well.

Having decided that ‘likes’ were swamping my Inbox, and that neither myself nor my laptop were coping well, I thought that I might return some of my visits by clicking on a Gravatar.  This works in some instances, but often I find that the Gravatar is not linked to a website.  What is the purpose of a Gravatar if not to display the sources where a person can be contacted?  An email address and a photo is of no help in this context.

Not sure what my own Gravatar would reveal, I took a quick look.  Relief!  The website is there, so you can find me, if you need to.  And now I’ll carry on and entertain you with a few orchids, in one of our loveliest stately homes, Burton Agnes, in North Yorkshire.

The carvings and wood panelling are quite extraordinary, I think you’ll agree.  Both house and gardens will repay a visit, if you get the chance.  Meantime, don’t forget to share six words with Debbie.  She’s in reflective mood this week.  Wishing you a happy Saturday!

  1. Jo it is the responsibility of each person who had a Gravatar to edit it so that it links to a website. I know many people don’t. I used to spend a great deal of time letting folks know and instructing them how to fix it. In the end I took the like option off my blog as it was playing havoc with my site.

    1. I did notice it wasn’t there any more, Sue. It’s one of those little things that chips away at the enjoyment of blogging, isn’t it? I no longer visit my ‘likes’ because I wouldn’t have time to do anything else in my life. I feel mean sometimes, but that’s just how it is.
      Happy Sunday! 🙂 🙂

      1. It was a tough decision but it had taken a lot of the joy out of blogging for me. So much time and really not building relationships or even readership just a pile of likes. When I still had the likes in my site but stopped reciprocating they went down by a third. Anyway I’m always challenged by the blog life balance so that is the decision I made for well being.
Wishing you a great day Jo! Xo

  2. I agree, it is most frustrating when a Gravatar does not link to a website. Love the gorgeous blooms…especially the peach beauty in the glass container.

    1. Mostly my problems are with people who don’t use WordPress, LolaWi. It can make life difficult sometimes, but nothing for you to worry about. I always appreciate your company, hon. 🙂 🙂

  3. Since house sitting and caring for a few orchids (and being able to cherish their beauty), they have become my favorite flowers. I had no idea before that they reemerge after a while! I’m with you about the gravatars, Jo. I have noticed some don’t give you any valid information. I think it might have to do with the different blogging platforms. I don’t think that Blogger and WordPress are very compatible, for example. But, I could be wrong.

    1. Not compatible in the least, I don’t think, Liesbet, which is why the Gravatar could be a help, but technical issues aren’t my strong point so I’m not preaching. 🙂 🙂 We have one very lovely orchid on the kitchen windowsill and another that’s still thinking about reemerging. 🙂

  4. Gravatars are notoriously tricky to navigate Jo. I’ve got two blogs, and trying to get two Gravatars was like (almost) impossible. (Two are necessary otherwise all comments just come from one blog). Stunning flowers, although (whisper it quietly) I do prefer the less showy wild orchids!

    1. Orchids can be over the top can’t they? We have one at home that I like a lot. I struggled to change the photo on mine and decided to just live with it in the end x

  5. Thank you for this post. I am one of those senior citizens who does not grasp all the ins & outs of the internet and thus thought the fact I couldn’t do anything with Gravatar was due to my ignorance. So I’m relieved to see that others have also had trouble, but after reading some of the comments, I’m still not sure that it’s worth it for someone like me to give it another try. In any case, at least I now know that I’m not alone!

  6. I’m not a huge fan of orchids, at least not the exotic ones, but I do like that sculpture, even though the boy behind appears to have a big spot on his nose, poor thin,g and looks as though he is about to kill the one in front of him!!

  7. Agree about the Gravatar…and agree with the others of stunning orchids. I adore vandas, and you have a beautiful one there…never managed to make them survive though…

  8. The images with orchids are so beautiful. În six words: Gravatar is a kind of bridge. As in Debbie’s pictures, a link to a website that resembles a bridge. Wishing you a good week !

  9. Absolutely stunning collection, and I totally agree with you on gravatars . . . . . no point in having one unless set up correctly. I guess I was lucky as I did one of the last WordPress courses where you were part of an online group learning together at the same time so when we got to gravatars we got to check out each others as well as sort our own!

  10. Only orchids would suit such an ornate stately home. Let me tell you I like being able to respond without getting caught up with 60 comments. All this summer cleaning is paying off, for me at least!

  11. Although I have a Gravatar, I’d forgotten what it was called. Thanks for the reminder.

    The orchids are stunning.

  12. Six word Saturday? Brief break in rain-dark clouds. You really have to think about your words. About Gravatar in the beginning I figured it was a different server. Sometimes I would be able to get to see their blogs and sometimes I was stymied.
