A profusion of water lilies

Profusion is a lovely word, isn’t it?  And certainly one you can apply to these water lilies.  Right now I’m feeling like I’ve had a profusion of summer days.  I know it can’t last but I love it. Recently I visited Burnby Hall Gardens, in the village of Pocklington in Yorkshire.  Home to the National Collection of over 100 varieties of water lily, it’s all about profusion.  Be prepared to be dazzled!

In case you hadn’t guessed, this is my entry for Paula’s Thursday’s Special.  ‘Pick a word’, says Paula.  I think she’d probably agree that it’s a ‘brilliant’ display.  And did you spot the heart?

  1. Beautiful!
When there are floods north of Buenos Aires, the rivers burst their banks and flow down to the River Plate and the sea. One of the consequences is that the currents bring enormous clusters of water lily pads and any animal that happened to be on them at the time. So it’s not unheard of to find snakes, small gators or red foxes in the areas closer to the river. It doesn’t happen very often, but it did last summer.
I bet that does not happen in Yorkshire 🙂

  2. Jo did you hear me squealing form across the pond, and I don’t mean the water lily pond. Oh my these are gorgeous. Another chilly day here and I’m afraid your water lilies would be shriveling up at the thought of living here. So sad for us.

  3. I love water lilies and you have captured a magnificent collection of them. Yes, I like the word ‘profusion’ too. It reminds me of another word “plethora”. I’ve always thought that they mean the same thing but when I just looked up both words in the dictionary, I was surprised to read:
profusion – an extremely large amount of something [very fitting], plethora – a very large amount of something, especially a larger amount than you need, want, or can deal with. [Definitely not the case with the waterlilies!!]

      1. Fine thank you, Jo. A couple of wintry days after our early spring. All the blossoms, azaleas, freesias and irises are in bloom, so no use being a global warming sceptic 😂
