Six word Saturday

In Tavira, it goes like this…

Down at the beach bar we have Santa and a lady friend, and a cute little tree.

Aside from the main town square, not a lot of money is spent on decoration, and Christmas is no worse for that.  A simple crib scene adorns a few street corners.  There is little money to spare, and food banks were operating in the supermarkets in late December.

The council are keen to attract further tourism to Tavira, and they are spending money on infrastructure.  The natural assets and the sunshine are there for all to see, but down at Quatro Aguas major improvements are underway.  Jude might enjoy these brand new Benches.

Maybe she’ll get to sit on them one day.  The view’s not bad….

Meantime, it’s Saturday and I hope you’re not too full of Christmas pudding to take a little stroll with me.  I’m not sure if Cate is playing Six Word Saturday this week.  It’s Boxing Day and that’s confusing, isn’t it?  Hope to see you all on Monday!

      1. Hi jo – nice Christmas but the hustle and bustle gets crazy (even when we draw boundaries) so really just glad it is over and glad it was peaceful and all that! Enjoy your red ❤️❤️

  2. Do you ever take a blogging holiday?? I’m not a Christmas decoration person, or even a Christmas person, but this post reminded me in a much gentler way of Warsaw’s Christmas excesses and made me a bit homesick – which is good, because I’m ambivalent about our projected and protracted stay. I too like the simplicity of the nativity scene, and the elegance of the public trees lighting.

    1. Only when I go to Tavira is the answer, Meg 🙂 Does that mean I’m due another visit? I’d love to be away over the Christmas period. 🙂 Once I’ve done my feeding people stuff it’s quiet for a few days so I’m working through my Inbox. My Polish uncle and family arrive on 4th so I’ll be panic stations and not fit for blogging around then. After that I can start to plan 🙂 You’ll love your European trip, once it comes around.

  9. Boas Festes to you too Jo. And yes, I hope that one day I shall sit on one of those benches and watch the boats. My kind of view. Tavira is definitely on my very short list (just the ‘must do’ ones on it now), but 2016 may not be the year for much in the way of travel, more a settling in period. Hope you’re not too stuffed! Very blustery here today, but mild and dry so far. I even have African daisies in flower! Off to Surrey tomorrow, so I may not catch up with you until we are back on Thursday. Just in time to celebrate the New Year with you 😉

    1. I noted the WP challenge this week was ‘Now’. They must mean an empty box of Thorntons and a couple of small pieces of Stollen 🙂 I haven’t made it out to jump in the puddles yet 🙂 I was thinking of posting my Newstead Abbey walk on Monday for your first edition of the Garden challenge, but if you’re away I’ll probably hold onto it for the following week. Have fun! 🙂

      1. For some odd reason although I am following WordPress I don’t get the photo challenges in my Reader any more. I usually wait for Gilly’s post 🙂
        The garden challenge starts next Sunday so maybe Monday 4th would be better so you can link to it.
        I like Stollen (‘cos I love marzipan) but we only had mince pies and an individual trifle this year. Far too many chocolates – though we have been very good and hardly eaten any. At this rate they will last all year!

      2. I did think that, but the Polish family arrive on 4th. I shall try to get myself organised in advance- ha! I usually get to the challenge via Gilly or whoever is quick to post. Haven’t actually seen the original yet. Lisa sent the Stollen but James has eaten most of it, so that’s ok 🙂 Got fig crackers and some interesting preserves to try too. Have a good time! 🙂

All is calm and all is bright by the looks of it in Tavira at Christmas time Jo .. bet you were wishing you were there in some ways … 😉 I’ve seen your comments re the rain , what a time people are having with it up in the North .. I feel I must stop grumbling , we ‘re luckyas it’s not been disruptive or causing problems and it’s actually dry today 🙂

    1. My son had never tried stollen before. He didn’t think he’d like it but has managed to consume most of the packet so it’s every man for himself! Got to rugby tackle him for the Thornton’s next, Poppy! Merry Boxing Day! 🙂

  13. Happy Christmas and Boxing Day! I love what you say about the money spent. Christmas festival in our town wasn’t anything spectacular, but it is people, not the attractions that make Christmas festivals special, merry and bright 🙂 Christmas Spirit, it is what matters 🙂

        We did some caroling in a local Nursing Home, I sang my heart out and was so delighted, but caught a flu virus somewhere. No real winter, you know, all the bugs alive and kicking, especially in the crowd.

  17. The square looks really pretty and baby Jesus has a cute smile 🙂 I hope they don’t change Tavira too much to increase tourism, it’s lovely as it is. I know that progress is necessary but it would be a pity if it became the same as everywhere else, hopefully they will do a good job. I don’t suppose they can change the old town, hope not, but the Quatro Aguas area is a bit of a flat and empty?

    1. It’s been done over a period of time, Gilly. The town square looked very different 10 years ago when we arrived, and though strange at first, we liked it. Works well for the summer concerts. Santa Lusia and Cabanas have also had facelifts on the front but the rest is more or less intact. There are long term plans for a marina by the flyover but it would be a huge project. We’ll see 🙂 🙂

      1. Yes, definitely more sensible. It’s lovely to have Christmas decorations but the amount spent on them is truly incredible. I was able to Skype my parents at Christmas time; we watched each other opening our presents. It was fun. And there were several phone calls to my daughter. Cheerful phone calls. 🙂

      1. We did have a lovely Christmas. It was milder than usual but still warm enough in the evening to sit outside to eat our Christmas dinner. There are raging bushfires in the southern states so we can count ourselves lucky that our weather is mild at the moment.

      3. The last I heard, 116 homes have been destroyed on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria by the raging fires that went through on Christmas Day. How devastating for those people but the good news is that no lives were lost. Homes can be replaced but people can’t. The fire was started by a lightning strike.

      5. Me neither. It must be the most horrific experience and it happens regularly here in summer. But people will still build their homes in bushland so that is the risk they take. I suppose everyone thinks it will never happen to them.
