Black and White 5 day Challenge- Day 1

I’m very much a person who thrives on colour, be it vibrant or more subtle nuances, so I kept my head down when I saw the Black and White 5 day Challenge making the rounds.  But when a lovely lady like Pommepal invites you, how can you say no?  Just as I was considering it, Wilbur’s Travels threw down the gauntlet too.  What’s a lady to do but delve into the archives for something you might like?  This is what I came up with.

I really like it, but more for his wonderful expression than the colouration.  Any ideas where it might be?  I’m sure some of you will know.  I’ll give you another clue tomorrow when I post my next black and white photo.

There are only two rules for this challenge:

1. On 5 consecutive days, create a post using either a past or recent photo in B&W.
2. Each day invite another blog friend to join in the fun.

Today I’m inviting Viveka.  She’s another colourful lady, like myself, and not much given to black and white, but I know if she takes the challenge on that she’ll do a cracking job.  No obligation to take part, of course.  It’s meant to be fun.  Apologies to lovely Gilly, whose kind offer I spurned (what a cad!) and many thanks to Pauline and Wilbur.

      2. Oh, no Jo! It’s not cheating at all. The best way to produce a good b&w image is to start in colour and enhance it before conversion. As you may be finding out creating a b&w image is not as easy as just converting colour, you have to pick the right photograph otherwise it just doesn’t work at all so that takes time and thought. Just let me know what you think at the end of the 5 days 🙂

      3. I’ve done all 5, Jude, and it is interesting to play with them. I tend to prefer sepia to black and white, but you know I’m a colour girl through and through. I’m not technical enough to be anything else. 🙂

      7. Doesn’t sound good. Nothing too serious or health related I’m hoping.
        I’ve just booked a week mid April because the prices around the Bank Hol are too high for us, then we’ll be out again later in the year. Look after yourself!

  6. Jo, brilliant entry to the challenge – interesting little man …. I love that your image is still very light and not too dramatic and dark … because he would have turned scary … like this he is a bit of fun and full of mischief. Sorry, for that I turn down this challenge.

  7. Jo – i’m glad you participate despite a preference for color. These sculptures are always so interesting when featured solo like this. In an array, we are tempted to scroll through too quickly, but with one we ponder many things – meaning, technique, intent, shadow, form.

    1. Thanks, Sammy 🙂 It’s rare for me to do a single photo, isn’t it? I usually bombard the hell out of you! And it’s a severe temptation even now 🙂 But he’s a good-looking guy, and deserves a bit of attention, doesn’t he? Thanks for taking the time, hon 🙂

    1. Yes, that’s about the strength of it, Sherri 🙂 Apparently this challenge started in December and is still going the rounds. I have a few thoughts on who to nominate but a few people have just left the nomination open. Not really in the spirit of things but highly understandable.
      Any guesses? 🙂

      1. I am fine, still struggling some days. Missing my old home, family and friends – just my past! As long as I keep myself busy it is okay. I started taking part in writing short piece of fiction. This is something different en makes me think about other things than missing the past.
