What do you do for fun?
My idea of fun is creating interesting travel-related blog posts. (well, trying to!) It’s bordering on the obsessive some days but it’s all that’s kept me sane while I’ve waited (and waited) for warmer days to arrive. Some of you may know that I’ve been taking a trip back in time and reliving the past in “A tale or two : my Greek Odyssey”.
In those days I used to keep a diary on the back of my postcard collection. It served two purposes : preserving the memories, and providing a few reliable photos in case the holiday snaps weren’t up to much. While I’ve been writing this series I’ve had to dig out the postcards to check a few facts. (the holidays were 20+ years ago) I thought that this Saturday I might share a few with you.
The last postcard is the only one I’ve shared already. Mostly our photographs were good enough, but on the lake we were too busy just looking, in awe. Hope you enjoyed these. Trigger any memories?
If you’re interested in the series at all, click on the Categories box in my sidebar and you will get a dropdown menu. Select “A tale or two : my Greek Odyssey” and it’ll take you there. Wordpress is clever sometimes, isn’t it? Meantime, let’s go and see Cate at Show My Face and see how she’s feeling this week.

What a fabulous idea to write a diary on the back of your postcards, now if only I’d thought of that in the days when I collected postcards 🙄

‘S ok, Vicky- I can’t read most of it. My handwriting was never a strength. 🙂

I can draw you in if you’d like, Meg, but I’m not much of an artist, so you’ll have to be a stick person. Which card? 🙂

The water colour was so vivid! Plus I was trying to keep a small boy from tumbling over the side, Madoqua. 🙂

I must have a real personality attraction to water. Maybe I have a lot in common with that small boy!
I travelled along the southern coast of Turkey and we sailed out amongst the islands where the water was a lovely colour too. I would like to write a post about it, but my photos are dismal. I did not get any postcards either. Perhaps I should just post with the photos I have.

Why not? Your writing is beautiful. Maybe you could tweak your photos a little with Photoshop or use a couple from Wikipedia?

I love all these old postcards Jo! I still have my 30 travel journals I wrote from age 20-32. Sometimes I go back and read them for fun and it takes me right back in time. Memories are so powerful!

Thanks, Nicole. I used to have diaries from when I was “really young” but my travelling didn’t start till much later.

I was lucky that my parents loved to travel so we would hit the road often in our station wagon and drove all across the country. I actually didn’t start my diaries until university and a lot was about life and figuring everything out. THen once I studied abroad, I wrote mostly about traveling. I stopped writing after the birth of my second child as I felt there wasn’t much more to write about except changing diapers and lack of sleep! Now I’ve got my blog! 🙂

Yes, I imagine so. It’s a good reason to not go back, Suzanne- just stay with the memories, but there are many other islands I’d still love to see.

Jo, I love the postcards! We are obviously like-minded because I’ve kept a collection too. And we recently discovered all the postcards we sent James’ mother for a bazillion years. Talk about a great walk down memory lane. Thanks for my first smile of the day. ~Terri

Happy you enjoyed them! I used to keep those that were sent to me as well, but I jettisoned most. Not the same if they’re not your own memories. I don’t receive many these days.

Good post. It seems we think alike. I used to buy postcards in case the photos were disappointing and I still do it even though these days I can instantly check the digital image.
