Still chasing romance in the moonlight!
I often accompany my garden designer husband if he’s working somewhere interesting so, when he took on a job at Whitley Bay, I thought it would be an ideal opportunity for me to see St. Mary’s Lighthouse. I remembered it, from a school trip with my son many years ago, as a particularly scenic spot. Perched on tiny Bait Island, and reached over a short causeway at low tide, I envisaged taking photos of the lighthouse with a backdrop of rock pools in the sweeping bay. The reality was somewhat different.
When the design was complete, Michael asked me if I’d like to come with him. Unfortunately the appointment was for 7.00 in the evening and, as you can see from the above, a little dark for rock pools. It was just about possible to navigate my way across the causeway in the glimmering moonlight. Very romantic, I think you’ll agree.
If you’re wondering where my six words came from, maybe you missed my romantic Six word Saturday last week.

I get a sense of mystery in the photos. A little like you would feel on the cover of a thriller.

It probably was a little like that in reality, Colline. It was much darker at the site of the lighthouse than I expected and I found myself looking over my shoulder a little. 🙂

I struggle with photos, in the dark or not… You are more adventurous that I would have been, being out there by yourself in the dark, watching for the tide too… No thanks. These photos turned out great! Happy almost Sunday to you. 😉

It was much darker than I had expected, Tonya, with no roadside lighting, but once I’d set off to see it I just couldn’t turn back. More foolhardy than anything else but the tide was very low. Happy Sunday to you, too 🙂

Lighthouses in the dark – that is indeed very romantic. I like this different take of a lighthouse captured during the night. Very nice.

I wasn’t too sure if I’d get a good shot, Otto. There was no other lighting than the moon so I was quite pleased with these. 🙂

The shadows of the last post are romantic, and a little haunting to me!

I meant to say “The shadows of the last photo…”

I had one eye on the incoming tide, Mlissabeth, and I was on my own so it was definitely more scary than romantic. But very beautiful 🙂

I love lighthouses! There is definitely a spookiness to them at night…especially if they aren’t functioning houses.

It was very dark and there were a couple of courting couples parked up, Amanda, so not really a place to linger alone. The sea looked magnificent moonlit- just a shame my camera wasn’t equipped to capture it. 🙂

I like the third picture best of all!

Must admit I really like the shadow patterns on that one, Andrew. 🙂

I am imagining you crawling over the rocks, getting a sopping foot. All for a lovely photo. The things we do for a good post. 🙂

Is be with you on that Jo. I imagine rather spooky.

I agree with Sylvia that it looks a little spooky. Maybe more spooky than romantic, although I guess it depends on who you’re with. 🙂

I was solo and keeping one eye on the tide, Cathy! Not a place to find yourself marooned at night 🙂

Oh dear, no that doesn’t sound like a good place to be marooned, Jo. 🙂

I love lighthouses, but that first pic is very spooky indeed. The moonlight definitely adds a bit of romance. 🙂

Haunted, d’you think, Ad? The bay itself looked all shimmery and lovely but there was no street lighting so I struggled to get a shot of it. I rather liked the lighthouse but it wasn’t really very romantic at all. (I was on my own!) 😦 Had to keep an eye on the tide too!

Can’t be very romantic one your own, Jo, especially if you think you might get washed away, instead of swept off your feet. 😀

That’s about the strength of it! 🙂 But fun (I think!)

It was a bit of a disappointment to only see it in the pitch dark, Judy, but it was beautifully atmospheric. I’m definitely going back in the summer. 🙂

These are stunning shots Jo! I’m finally playing catch up on my blog reading again. Life got so busy with my Cuba trip and coming home to chaos! I hope you are doing well. Any signs of Spring yet? We still have a couple feet of snow but it is rapidly melting. The birds are back too. In two weeks it is Spring Break for my kids and we are going to AZ to see my parents. The kids haven’t seen them since June because of the chemo. It will be a thrilling reunion and I’m really happy. My mom is beyond excited as she really misses them. 🙂

Hi Nicole 🙂 Lovely to hear from you. I’ve seen a few bits and pieces on FB but no update on your Dad. Snow??? I probably shouldn’t say this but we’ve had none this year. We’ve just had a glorious week of Spring weather and the blossom is out everywhere. Bit cooler today but the daffs and crocuses don’t seem to mind.

Sorry about the wet feet, but they were worth it for the sake of those gorgeous photos.

Thanks, Viv 🙂 I felt slightly crazy walking out there in the dark but the silhouettes were lovely. When Mick picked me up afterwards he said he hadn’t realised how dark the approach would be. I’m determined to go back sometime this summer because there’s a wonderful stretch of coast to walk.

Beautiful pictures Jo ! A candle light dinner near the lighthouse lit by the moon light would definitely make it more romantic. Ohh my imagination is running wild 🙂

It actually wasn’t romantic at all, Dallas! Maybe if Michael had been with me but he was with the client and it was a little dark and deserted to be comfortable. And I got seawater in my shoes! Some of us never learn 🙂 You ok?
