Boats, and more boats!

I always wanted a houseboat!

I always wanted a houseboat!

Do you know, I think I know what it must feel like to have your name up in lights on Broadway!  Or, maybe Shaftesbury Avenue?  Not once, but twice this week I have found my name in a blog!  Fame, notoriety, or just really lovely friends?  I think you know the answer.

First I’m invited to go Split-toning with Sonel.  Now you know, and I know, and even Sonel knows that technique and me are strangers when it comes to photography.  But I have been known to mess about a bit.

Whilst I was thinking how best to approach this, I suddenly found myself a sparkling diamond on Paula’s  beautiful Thursday’s Special.  What’s a girl to do but slap on some powder and paint, add a few spangles, and step onto the landing stage.  Ahoy there!

The marina transformed!

The marina transformed!

Of course, I have no idea what I’m doing.  I’m like a child with a paintbox- a splash of this, a dash of that!  I only know what I like, and am limited to Ulead Photo Express 4.0 to effect the changes.

I like a working boat too, don't you?

I could have sketched this myself? Maybe not!

I could have sketched this myself? Maybe not!

I’m not at all sure that this is appropriate but I really like the effect.  I used a variation of “Oilpaint” in Ulead Photo Express.  I think it looks a bit like a negative, or a picture in a child’s colouring book.

I don't mind a boatyard either

I don’t mind a boatyard, now and then

Sonel knows I like sepia. It's kind of my era!

And Sonel knows I like sepia. It’s kind of my era!

Such an exotic name for a tiny boat!

This is a watercolour effect

This is a watercolour effect- unsure if it’s appropriate, but I really like it.

I like the reflection on this one

I rather like the reflection on this one

This blue effect seems to bring the photo alive to me

But, for me, it comes alive with the blue effect.

Talking of reflections, this one I really like

Talking of reflections, this one I really love

Another one I love

And with a pink tint, too.

This little wooden craft is a favourite of mine too

Or a blue tint?

Do you like the blue tint?

And in the harbour mighty PSS Wingfield Castle

And finally, in the harbour, mighty paddlesteamer PSS Wingfield Castle

Sepia takes this right back in time

Sepia takes it right back in time, don’t you think?

I have to humbly apologise to Sonel if this wasn’t quite what she intended.  Do, please, visit Sonel’s Corner to see how it really should be done, and maybe try it yourself.  She is an expert in my eyes, and also the loveliest friend.

Meantime, the star of the show is Hartlepool marina.  I have spent many happy hours there taking photographs of boats.  Paula knows I love them.  I’d like to say thank you to her for making my Thursday very special.  Do you have something special you’d like to share?  Thursday’s Special is the place to do it.

  1. Lovely photos Jo. Of course it has nothing whatsoever to with my partiality to anything blue water, all sorts of boats and seeing new parts of this wonderful world we live in! Also fun to play with the tones I think. It gives different perspectives.

  2. Lots of interesting effects Jo, nicely done – no end to the fun you can have. I am intrigued by the presence of a narrowboat in Hartlepool Marina – I wonder how it got there and perhaps more of intriguingly – where on earth would they go, surely not the North Sea 🙂

    1. It’s pretty much a houseboat. There are a couple of them moored now. Shame not to go any place but up and down 🙂
Thanks for the kind words. I don’t have much patience for this kind of thing, but once in a while…

  3. You’ve made me laugh girl… sepia being your era 😉 Let’s not exagerate things. I like seeing you playful with your photos and I rather fancy your children’s colour book edition. Does it say I am still a kid? Watercolour turned out great. You have taken two challenges far and beyond and I appreciate it, and I am sure Sophia will too. Very creative and evocative – so many moods in just a few shots 🙂 Next time I hope to see you on one of the boats waving happily to the rest of us .. probably somewhere in Portugal 🙂 Btw, when is your Barcelona trip and your b-day? 🙂 You’ve made my muchThursday more special. 1. WordPress always had a mind of it’s own, Paula. Bit like me 🙂
Barcelona happens Sunday, 3rd November (birthday- 5th) Wonder if I’ll take any boat photos.
Many thanks for your kind words, Paula. It’s always a pleasure to visit Lost in Translation. 🙂

      1. How long will you be there? Interesting enough, I visited Barcelona once many years ago and it was in November. The weather was wonderful 🙂

      2. 5 days. I wanted to go Friday till Wednesday so I’d get to see the Montjuic fountains, which are only Fri/Sat off season, but my daughter is coming to stay on that Fri/Sat and visiting the Goth weekend at Whitby on her way home.
Hope to spend a day in Girona too. Getting very excited! 🙂

    1. I was a bit worried, Sonel, but when Paula paid me that lovely compliment on Thursday’s Special it seemed a nice idea to do something in response. And you found yourself in the middle of it, so I’m really happy that you don’t mind my interpretation.
Yes, it was fun. Now I need a cool cloth on my head and a lie down in a darkened room. Many thanks, hon. Hugs! 🙂

      1. With the Split-Toning you never need to be worried hon. As you can see, there is a lot of room for creativity and I love what you did. Hope you’re feeling much better than I do. 😀 *big hugs*

      2. Now I have my answer (flu), but I can’t find anywhere on there to leave a comment? I love the Grunge effect and that last one is superb, but you know I’m an old stick in the mud and I like the original best of the first one.
I was happy to find a link from the bottom of the page to Sonel’s Corner though, so I’m slightly less confused now (I think?) Get well soon 🙂

      3. Sorry hon. I disabled the comments as I have so much to catch up on that I can’t comment here and on my own blog as well and it’s time for me to go and take a nap as well. I am still having dizzy spells so I am taking it easy still.

Yeah, I know my ‘stick-in-the-mud’ friend and it doesn’t matter at all. As long as there’s something you enjoy. I know I enjoy playing around with my photo’s, so we’re both getting enjoyment from it and that’s all that counts. 😀

Don’t make me confused now, please. hahahahah
Thanks hon. Take care. 😀 *hugs*

      4. What’s the matter? I thought I hadn’t seen you about much, but when I followed you “home” it took me to your split-toning page, and I wasn’t sure if you’d posted on the other site or no? Been too busy to go and check, but I will do right now. Big, but gentle, hug back 🙂
