I just can’t s-top!

I always get a bit nervous when people are coming for food.  I’m not the best cook, and I certainly can’t bake!  Cakes are easy, though- I can buy them, but I do tend to overcompensate.  Can you tell?  That one still in the box makes me giggle- reminds me of a Batman mask.  No, honestly, I haven’t touched the wine yet!  But I could get a reputation…

Please, do help yourself, even if it’s just a simple biscuit.  Don’t know why I get so worried.  We’re all friends here, aren’t we?  In case you haven’t guessed, I’m joining lovely Su today, for Tea time in the blogosphere.  She’s a great cook, and a lovely hostess.   Oh, that reminds me of someone else who’s a wonderful hostess.  Mustn’t forget #SquareTops!  What’s your favourite topping?  Wishing you all a great day!

  1. What a spread, Jo!
I hear you – not having enough food for the occasion. or that it is not to the taste of the guests, is such an Asian anxiety! Even my mother, hostess extraordinaire & culinary genius, is flustered before we come over for a meal.

But yes, we are a gathering of friends and I am so glad to share this table and feast with you!

  2. You do need to quit worrying so much. Anyone would have to be nuts not to love the offerings you show us here. Again, that first cake reminds me of one my grandma used to bake. She was a magnificent pastry cook. Pity she didn’t pass that skill on to me. 😉

  3. Hello Jo, nice to meet you. It is Tracy here. You made me laugh as I don’t cook either. Thank goodness for wonderful patisseries. I’m always nervous too about people coming over for arvie tea. Mostly because my house is a mess!

I can’t go past a chocolate roll. Looks delicious. With a nice cup of coffee – perfect.

    1. I always go for a smile, if I can, Tracy. There are enough long faces in the world. I’m an ok cook when it comes to dinners (or we’d have starved long ago because him indoors can just about use a tin opener 🙂 ) but not much use at the sweet stuff. There’s a bakery on every second corner here, so it’s not a skill I’m likely to pick up any time soon. Yes- I did sample the chocolate cake. Very nice!
Thanks for your lovely company. Have a nice day!

    1. What we know as biscuit cake, Carol. It comes in many forms here and this is one of the more glam ones, at a favourite restaurant. Layers of crushed biscuit and cream. Sound ok? 🙂 🙂

  4. Now that’s a top smart take on words, Jo. That’s what happens when the brain has an abundance of sugar 🙂 If there is any biscuits leftover I could dunk one of them in my expresso. Have a good one.

    1. I think I might find you one or two still hidden in the fridge, Suzanne. It’s a rubbish hiding place, but that’s what happens when I overload sugar 🙂 🙂

  5. I definitely like the cream one top left, and the chocolate roll, and the…..I LOVE fresh desserts. Difficult to get here right now, so I may go down the rabbit hole of baking.🙂

    1. It’s so many years since I baked (at school, I think!) that I’ve probably forgotten how. And bakeries are a staple of life here in Portugal, so there isn’t really any need, Erica 🙂 🙂

  6. Look lovely but maybe a bit sweet? I tend to go for shortbread or scones when I’m out to tea (cheese scones for preference slathered in good butter of course). Otherwise I am always partial to fresh fruit tarts with fresh cream – can’t beat berries as far as I’m concerned. My own efforts stop at Victoria spones and fairy cakes – same simple mixture!

    1. A lovely cheese scone with big nuggets of melted cheese in works for me, Mari. Or a fruit scone with jam and cream 🙂 🙂 Mick is the serious cake addict, but I am his able assistant… of course! How’re you doing?
