There is a season,
Turn, turn….
In Faro old town, in the Algarve, it was mating season for storks. Everywhere you looked, they were swooping through the sky, calling and shrieking to each other. The cacophony had everyone riveted to the spot, staring upwards. Try as I might, I couldn’t capture a good photo of these magnificent creatures in flight. I was always a wing beat, if not two, behind them.
Fortunately, the architecture almost compensates. Have you noticed the seasons changing? The Weekly Photo Challenge would love you to share. Me, I’ll probably be singing ‘that song’ all day!
And popping in to see Cate at Six Word Saturday, of course. Enjoy your weekend! Hope to see you on Monday, for a walk.

Spectacular architecture , and splendid captures, Jo!

The old part of the city is lovely, Anna, and a world away from the high rises and flats of the rest. Thanks, hon! 🙂

The seasons are changing here in TX, three daffodils are opened with many more to follow. Pretty secure nests the storks have built.

Hooray! White blossom in our local park, though not fully out yet. And we share our snowdrops and heather with the neighbours, who have budding daffodils. 🙂

Wonder if the small babies all come from Portugal coz an old (danish ?) saying tells that this bird deliver all the babies – in Alsace there are tons of storks too – but I have never seen them fly with babies “hanging” in their beaks – probably Alsace is their pit stop when work done… 😀

Oh, those poor, hard-working Portuguese storks! I feel quite sorry for them now. 😦 No more baby booms- by decree!

Hi Jo,
No storks around here, neither nesting nor in flight. But we did have some turkeys in the garden yesterday [http://tinyurl.com/zyv6qdm].
I like the architecture in your photos.
Have a great weekend,
Pit

Ahh thanks for putting ‘that song’ into my head darling, but I guess it could be worse! So it would seem that the storks are very Catholic birds 🙂 I love your photos.

I’m glad you noticed, Gilly. Yes, they are very observant indeed 🙂 Just one more chorus, before you go? Thanks, darlin’.

We witnessed the storks when we were in Faro. They were fascinating! No change of seasons here in Ontario as of yet but I hear Spring is just around the corner😉

As I walked swiftly through my local park this morning, I smiled to see that the blossom is coming out, Lynn- no matter if it’s cold. 🙂

Looks like a beautiful city! I’ve unfortunately never been, but Portugal is generally just amazing

It’s a country I love too. 🙂 Faro is mostly a sprawling, modern city, but the old town and the marina are beautiful. Thanks for your visit, Caroline.

Beautiful church. Reminds me of the churches in Goa, India.

The shots are of several different churches, Suzy. The dark-edged one reminded me of Madeira- a very similar style to Goa, I think. 🙂

Beautiful shots of the church, Jo. Love how the colour white contrasts with the grey clouds above. Worked well. I really like how you just captured that bird in the last shot. It almost looks as if it was trying to not be in the shot 😀 Maybe they were keen on mating with each other as you mentioned 😀 Happy weekend.

There are 3 or 4 really lovely churches in Faro, Mabel, and we were just having a wander on a rather unsettled day. Yes, that one is the one that ‘almost got away’. 🙂 Many thanks! Hope you’re having a happy time too.

I now have that song in my head…
Even though you didn’t capture your perfect photo, the ones you’ve shown here are great. Are the storks noisy? And I was wondering about the mess they make?
LikeLike
Unbelievably noisy, Elaine! I thought at first that they were in distress 🙂 Can’t say I noticed a lot of mess but then I was mostly looking up. Maybe just as well 🙂

Yes, maybe a good idea to keep looking up – except if one is flying overhead in which case you might get something in your eye! 😉

The storks certainly know that real estate truth, “it’s location, location, location”. What a beautiful place to make a home and raise a family.

Faro is mostly modern sprawl, Ann, but there is a beautiful area just behind the marina. The cathedral tower looks out across the lagoon so it’s all rather lovely. 🙂

This is the land of the crow only, this time of year. No big birds, ever, except the odd flock of wild turkeys occasionally trooping across the curving unpaved road to work just before sunrise, daring me to hit them.

And you haven’t succeeded yet, Ron? 🙂 Reminds me of a very defiant crow I saw out on a walk yesterday. He was very vocal too. I thought it sounded like a complaint about the weather. 🙂
