Water makes me happy

Tina’s inviting us to choose our own subject this week, and I’m going with water. My star sign is Scorpio and, though I’ve never really seen the connection between that curly-tailed creature and water, I have to admit that I have a strong attraction to it. I’m never happier than when I’m on the beach, examining shells and listening to the sound of the waves. But if I’m not near the ocean, a river will do, flowing gently but with determination towards the sea. Or I can be calm and happy by the still waters of a lake.

In my Algarve home, in the south of Portugal, nothing lies between me and Africa but water. The sandbar islands that I love sit serenely offshore, lapped by the tide, each a world in miniature. The water flows out into the lagoon and beyond them to the ocean.

It’s no coincidence that I chose Tavira as my home. It’s supremely placed to take advantage of the water that laps its shores and runs through it. From across the water the offshore island beckons. It cast a spell on me from the very first time I saw it. The Rio GilΓ‘o flows softly out to meet it.

It’s a wonderful coastline, with plenty of places to play. I hope you enjoyed sharing it with me. Thank you, Tina, for giving me a choice.

  1. I love water too Jo (though not water sports!) – always feel so much better when walking down by the sea, whether it’s a rough and windswept day or calm and tranquil :). Thanks for sharing these beautiful pictures πŸ™‚ Hope you’re having a good week! It seems to be “silly season” here – everyone rushing around! Am trying to avoid the shops unless it’s essential and time my runs to quieter times. Recovering from a near 40 degree day on Tuesday and my German class Christmas party last night (I only had a couple of proseccos but talking German most of the time is tiring!). Today is thankfully much cooler but we have storms predicted for later. I’m visiting my daughter (a fellow Scorpio, the rest of us are fire signs!) the other side of Perth today so fingers crossed the traffic won’t be too bad! Take care xx πŸ™‚

    1. It’s not been a good week, Rosemay. My stepbrother died unexpectedly on Sunday evening. Heart attack. In his 60s. He had angina but was on meds and led a normal life. Then Terje, my friend with Covid, had his life support system switched off on Tuesday. And we’ve finally decided that Christmas in the UK is not going to happen. I’m trying to count my blessings, because there are lots, and stay cheerful.

      1. Oh my goodness Jo am so very sorry to read this. I’m also sorry that I have only just seen your reply just have had a few dramas with kids and kittens this week but nothing to compare with your week. My deepest condolences for the loss of your stepbrother and your friend. Covid is such an insidious disease and it is causing so much heartbreak in so many ways. I’m so sorry about your Christmas plans being dashed – at least you can stay safe and sound in the Algarve but I know that is going to be hard. I think there is so much emotion and angst swirling around at the moment – I have found things hard recently even little things just seem to rankle. Best to acknowledge when you’re feeling down and be kind to yourself. Take good care, lots of love xxx

      2. You’re always a wonderful support, darlin, and we all have our share of problems, big and small. Yesterday lunchtime we gathered to drink coffee and brandy to celebrate Terje;s life, with his widow following his cremation. How easy does my life seem in comparison? Stay safe, and love your loved ones. It’s all you can do! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

      3. So glad you could gather to celebrate Terje’s life Jo – life is certainly a challenge at times and it must be an especially difficult time for his family. Look after yourself and take care xx πŸ™‚

  2. Stunningly beautiful scenes, Jo. Your love and affection for Tavira shines through each and every image. It’s a bliss living close to the sea 🌊 the right place for a Scorpio. Klausbernd is a Scorpio but I think my affection for the water goes further being a Waterman – Wassermann – Vannmann – Aquarius. Xx

  3. Who doesn’t love water, I wonder? Not being in it when it’s freezing cold, or being out in a boat on a storm, but the pure beauty of water is undeniable. Your pictures are lovely, Jo.

  4. Such gorgeous photos! Water makes ME happy as well…. I love, need, must be near a body of water be it the sea, a river a lake. Are you a fire sign too? I know I need water to cool the internal heat.

Thanks for sharing such beautiful images in your part of the world.
