Playing with shadows

You can’t get more dramatic shadows than those around the cathedral in Seville on a dark evening.  I imagine it’s wonderfully peaceful now but the atmosphere was vibrant when I was last there.  Today I’m playing with shadows for Jude’s 2020 Photo Challenge #18

I love the description of photography as writing with light.  I’ve always considered myself a writer rather than a photographer.

I like photos to tell a story, or make me want to linger.  How about you?

  1. Beautiful series of shadows, Jo. I remember this church vividly from a visit many, many years ago, it’s simply stunning. I like your description of photography as writing with light. “I’ve always considered myself a writer rather than a photographer.”
    It makes me think of Nietzsche who wrote that thoughts are the shadows of our feelings – always darker, emptier and simpler. I quite like that. 😉

      1. I certainly hope you don’t stop! I had to almost stop due to my foot calcination pains and the quarantine. You can imagine that my clothes barely fit. Still, I’ll make myself a cake for my half a century mark on Saturday. 😉

  6. Beautiful photos, Jo. I like photos to tell a story as well, like the Wordless Wednesdays posts. But… it’s hard for me to keep my mouth shut – I can never go totally Wordless. Maybe with a bit of practice in the future. 🙂 Also, the saying “A photo tells more than 1,000 words” is only slightly accurate. I think a photo tells its own story, but not all of the story, as the photographer “tweaks” the story when taking the photograph a certain way. One day, I would like to dedicate a blog post to that. I do like the thought of “photography being writing with light.” I’d never heard of that and, as you know, I’m a writer at heart, so this saying resonates with me as well.

    1. I have a strong tendency to edit out the less desirable bits, Liesbet, so I’m inclined to think the camera most certainly can lie… well, the holder, anyway 🙂 🙂 Hope it warms up for you soon!

  7. Your vivid words move me as much as your eye-catching photography. I would say that you are more of a visual storyteller than merely a writer. Gorgeous shots. I am especially drawn to the statute shadow wandering down the lane. And you never fail to delight me with your reflective images.

  8. I enjoyed your photos, loved the gate and the green channel. Photography is all about light and exposure. It would be interesting to see some photos of the exact same spot, same angle but at different times of the day. How about that for a blog post?

    1. That’s more Jude’s idea of fun than mine, David. I’m a point/shoot/edit kind of photographer with very limited technical skills. It’s more about the feelings for me. And none of these are close to home so they would be no use as a subject. I’m sure Jude will be doing something similar in her challenge. 🙂 🙂 Thanks for your company!

  9. We were in Sevilla last november… it seems ages ago!
    I love when photographs tell a story or at least give me a hint that something was going on when the picture was taken…

  12. This is the first time I have heard the phrase “writing with light.” For me, I sometimes get lucky being at the right place at the right time, and the sheer number of photos I take. Sometimes I find gems when I look back on the photos, I did not see when I was there. Stunning pictures, Jo!
