There isn’t a subject in the world I’d less rather tackle than people. They’re so tricky and they just won’t sit still! And they get in the way of my beautiful compositions! I’m that person who waits patiently (or not) until someone has taken the hint and moved along, out of frame. But there are some places you have no hope of getting all to yourself, and I confess to trying to make an appealing picture of the above. Lovers and Paris! They go hand in hand, don’t they?
Can I count this as street photography? It was on the street.
Nor am I averse to spying from my bedroom window!
Barcelona now- that’s a city for fun. And FULL of people! But I avoided as many as I could.
I’ve always liked this harbour shot
And a statue is an easy target
But I struggled mightily with the bubble makers and shakers
I think I’d better go and practise some street photography and report back, don’t you? But I’m sure Yvette would agree it’s all about the fun, and I do try to have that.

It is funny, Jo, but the people are what I study even if the background is not perfect or has some distracting buildings.
in your first photos, I can see the beauty in the reflection clear and no people displayed. It is an absolutely perfect shot, like a prism with water and history displayed, but I miss the people 🙂

Essentially I’m a loner, Robin, and I don’t miss people at all (obviously excepting family and close friends). My idea of heaven is solitude and nature. 🙂

I’m never any good at street photography myself, Jo. I always feel like I’m intruding on people’s privacy. Sometimes I do get bold, but more often than not, I pass by opportunities. Sometimes I ask people if I can take a photo of them; but once they say yes, then it seems too posed. Otherwise they say no and put their hands in front of their faces or turn away. Funny thing is, here in China, people always want to take pictures of me, and they expect I should say yes! 🙂

The only way you can get a record of being in China is to ask them to take shots of you, isn’t it, but I guess blondes are a rarity in China. 🙂 Good-looking blondes, anyway!

Yes, Jo, many Chinese people ask me if they can take a picture, but they want to pose with me and take the picture with their camera. Sometimes I do ask these people to take a picture with my camera, and they usually do. The quality of those pictures is sometimes good and sometimes not. So sadly, I don’t get many pictures of myself in China. And right now I’m not too happy with any of them because I’ve put on weight while here and no matter how much walking I do, I can’t seem to get it off! xxx

Noodle diet can’t help? You’ll soon be back in a ‘normal’ lifestyle and eat lots of healthy fruit (and stuff your face with all the things you’ve missed 😦 )

I can’t wait to get back to my Western food, Jo. Funny thing, I’ve always loved Chinese food as served in American Chinese restaurants but I’m not a fan of most Chinese food here in China!! I also look forward to feeling normal again!

A nice start, and yes, street photography is a wide ranging term. Now I have to teach you to get closer to your subjects, a lot lot closer. 🙂

You have great photos and you shouldn’t bother about the label as professional photographers haven’t yet agreed on what street photography is. Who cares! While they fight, we the amateurs are occupying the streets and making great photos. You surely deserve compliments for your photos and the accompanying narrative. No surprise though. You’re a master of it.

I don’t think I’d have the patience to wait for people to move. But then, I’m not a photographer. Take the picture to record the moment (and prove I was there) and move on. You’d be horrified at my efforts, Jo! 😀

Probably not, H 🙂 I used to be pretty terrible myself. My daughter was recently looking over my shoulder at the blog and she said ‘Did you take those photos? You used to be terrible’ so I guess I’ve improved along the way. Besides, they’re not so easy to take when you run everywhere 🙂 🙂
